PSU is 300watt by Allied Model AL a300 ATX 3-4 years old.

All three fans are visably slow (side cover off) turning for several seconds to a minute upon start-up before eventually speeding up.

DVOM reads 12+ volts on plug while in series to fan @ boot without serious fluctuation in voltage.

    And 5 volts to MOBO

    CMOS battery good.

    CPU fan new.

    Running AMD 1343 MGz
    Asus MOBO A7A266
    512 Single stick memory
    NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Video Card
    Creative sound lab sound card
    Windows XP

Also experiencing some (not daily) spontaneous reboots

Also got error message after crash "Improper Frequency Combonation"

I ran memtest for 5 passes no errors.

Make sure your fans are VERY clean of dust/pet hair etc.!!!

Maybe due to overheating since the fans aren't spinning properly!! Does it do it with the case open?? And also try pointing a small household fan into it with the case open, and if it is a overheat problem...that would most likely stop it!! Then ofcourse you know it is time to do something with the cooling on the system!!

Do you have a Heatsink on your CPU? I wonder if its a power issue? SHouldnt be....300 watts should be more than enough to power that system you have there....Im heading to lunch now (At work) But ill reflect on it, and see if I can some up with anything else. Good luck with that.

I'll clean the PSU fan, the other two CPU and Case are clean.

CPU Heatsink and CPU fan are new as is thermal bonding "goo".

The Reboots are not occuring often enough that I can yet establish a pattern as to the case side being off helping.
I'll put a 8" house fan next to the open tower for insurance untill I nail it down.

I'm using the machine merely to email and print Word docs so I'd like to save it if possible.

PS I also dual boot in SUSE 9.1 with similar problems.

    Thanks all.

I pulled the 80mm case fan and it is a 2001 vintage sleeve bearing model and appears to be dying fast. Now, takes a finger to start it spinning.

What is perplexing though, is that the CPU's (nearly new) fan is starting to spin really slow for the first minute or so.
