    Hello all,

I'm about to buy a Dell Dimension computer online, and they offer the basic Roxio software for, oh, about $30.00.

What are your opinions: buy the software with the system or go with a another program (if so, which programs)?

    Thanks very much,

I use slysoft software and nero 7 and i absolutely love it! i would go with another program than roxio. Haven't heard many great things about it. There are also free burning alternatives. Just my opinion though.

I just bought a Dell Dimension and don't recall having to pay for Roxio. Are you sure about this?

I would try this http://www.majorgeeks.com/CDBurnerXP_d4242.html as its free and has most of the main parts that Roxio offers ( only missing Drag to Disk type packet writing application for drag n drop but its not a major need these days with cheap CDRW or DVDRW disks you can easily format/erase and use again to do the same job )

but if you were to buy a product go for Nero.

    Hi Starkman,

My Advice: Go with another program! I had Roxio on my computer and had nothing but problems with it. I currently use Nero Premium Edition and have had ZERO problems. As Halo mentioned earlier, if you're looking for a freebie, you might try the freeware CDBurnerXP which can write CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW discs. Although I've never actually used CDBurnerXP, I've heard good things about it.

OMG, I just can't believe that Dell has the nerve to currently charge $30.00 for "the basic" Roxio software! I wouldn’t install it on my computer if they paid me 30 bucks! <g> A while back I had the Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator 6 for PC installed as a "freebie" with one of my new computers. The program was plagued with problems, with little to no support from Roxio. While I was able to copy a few smaller items onto CDs, copying larger items caused the program to freeze up. Additionally, I never could get it to do anything regarding the DVD part of the program.

Not only did the program constantly freeze, but it freezes the entire system. Not only that, you cannot kill it through the Task Manager - and worse, you cannot even invoke the Task Manager after starting the Roxio program when it locks up. You cannot even shut down or reboot at this point. You then have no choice but to press the on/off switch pull out the power cord from your computer to get Roxio to stop running!

And what a total joke Roxio "support" is! I had the Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator 6 software for less than a week and I called twice with major problems. On the second call, which was only 5 days after I started using the software, they wanted to charge me! They said that because I had "more than one problem" with the software they would have to charge $35 per call for support thereafter! Do yourself a huge favor and check out the Roxio discussion boards to see all the problems people are experiencing before you throw your $30 bucks away!

    Good Luck!

    Hey, thanks all,

I was online buying a Dimension 5150. As I was customizing the order, I noticed that the Roxio software was not free, not even a basic version. Yet, when I got the quote, it showed it on there. I talked with Dell, and they said that the software wasn't showing on their end (their copy of the quote), and I said, "Well, I don't want to be charged for it." The rep said I wouldn't be. Fine with me. But I am going to look at the other refs you folk have given me.

    Thanks again,

    Starkman
