Im writing on a small iphone so I apologize for spelling and gramnar.

    HP DV7T-4100 select notebook.
    Windows 7 64 home premium
Intel i7-740qm quad core processir w/ turbo boost
1gb ATI mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics
    Samsung HM640JJ 7200ROM hard drive
    Intel wireless N-card

Was actually on Majorgeeks site clicking through a response on new laotops when it began. Started to see colored static on screen and then nothing. Now all I see is black on laptop. I had seen strange static though a few days prior.

I was able to connect to another screen. But after windows screen its purple screen. Works on connected screen in safe mode.

I performed hard reboot. Ran tests from memory and hardware. Nothing

No exclamation marks in device manager.

I did a system restore. Nothing. Tried older system restore and says they are all corrupted

    Error messages:
    1. Check for soltions to inreported problems.
    2.Solve a problem with AMD/ATI Video Driver.
    3. Solve a problem with AMD-Display Adapter-ATI Radeon Graphics card.
    Clicking through nothing to help.

Went to HP and tried to download drivers but hp site wont let me in safe mode.

    Ran chkdsk /f

Hopefully I didnt make any problems worse.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

I was just replacing this laptop looking for a new one. Was going to donate it to a senior home. If I can fix it cheaply. Has always run hot, fan is set for comstant on. I do clean it. I have recovery discs.

Sadly my backup from past 6 months is corrupt but in safe mode I see my files so hopefully Im safe.

If you have the Service Manual for the laptop, it looks as if you're going to have to open it up and replace the Graphics Card and pull the cooling unit for the CPU, clean the top of the CPU and the bottom of the cooling unit with 90% isopropyl alcohol, do the same for the GPU cooling unit and apply new thermal paste to the top of the CPU and the top of the GPU on the graphics card before re-attaching the cooling units.

I'm certain that all the problems are heat related and probably because during manufacture, thermal paste wasn't properly utilized. Make sure to apply it properly by following the instructions included with the thermal paste. You should notice a decrease in temperatures when done.

If an external display works normally in Safe Mode, I have some doubt as to the graphics card itself being the issue.

Have you completely uninstalled all ATI software and drivers? Have you run any hardware tests like MemTest? As far as reinstalling software, I would go directly to AMD/ATI for drivers and the successor software to the Catalyst software packages.

I have a similar setup in my ThinkPad with an i7 and nVidia graphics and it does tend to run warmer than I'd like...

While in Safe Mode, the OP is in native VGA mode and not in the full resolution of the graphics card. The card's driver is bypassed in Safe Mode. It is on both of my Dell laptops anyway. The OP mentions "static" which was one of the symptoms of MY graphics card beginning to fail on my Precision M70.

    Thank you and Merry Christmas.

I ran the tests you can run from f10 and both showed no oroblems. I believe one was memory.

I did not completely inistall drivers. Im not 100% sure. Is this when I go to my computer and remove drivers ? If so then yes I did.

When I go to AtI website to download drivers I hot error messages they failed to install.

Can u pkease explain catalyst sodlftware ?

Right before this issue the screen showed what appeared to be colored static getting bigger and bigger. I shut diwn the machine and since then Ive been in this predicament.

Still turns purple after microsoft start up screen if Om not in safe mode so there has to be something not working correct.

Still can only get external screen in safe mode, not laptops. Worst case I want to be able to not be in safe mode and have an rxternal screen working so at least I can give laptop to someone.

    Thanks.

    Reran memory test no issues.

I then tried to uninstall and delete AMD and ATI directories as I read it may be why I coukdny update drivers.

I did download then something from ATI but got error message tgat I didnt write down.

Now instead of a purple screen it takes axlong while in microsoft start up then I get error message about ATI that Im attaching pic from my screen.

Still cant ooen except safe mode.
