woke up this morning and puter is on strike. all connections are so slow. rang verizon to check that i havnt somehow lost my dsl and they said that their connection is fine. rang emachines on advise from verizon, to check the internet settings. they made me shut off all the startsystems, delete cookies and tempfiles and history, delete MS office and money (which i dont use) and told me to ring back if no improvement. told them that those were not the problem. tried system restore back to last week. no difference. ran spybot, no detections. HELP. i have windows XP. they asked if there are any new updates but i cant get the update screen loaded. took ages to get to MG. tried to download update on antivir but it said i was running at 56mb and it would take 3hrs. dont know what to do or how to do it. i know you guys are better than 'they' are so im dumping it on you before i try to get anymore teck support from them. :( much aloha in advance

Try, turning off the computer, turn off any router/switch, and turnoff the DSL modem.

    Wait 5 mins or so.

Turn on the modem, wait 5 mins
Turn on the router/switch (if you have one), wait 5 mins.
Turn on the computer. Is it any better?

    Laurie,
Was it running fine before this, or was it simply "adequate"? Also, can you post your system specs?
    Processor
    HD
    Memory
    Video Card
    Power Supply
    Anti Virus
    Firewall
Anything else you can think of.

Also, press Ctrl Alt Esc and see how many processes are running for all users.

When you woke up this morning, did you turn the computer on, or had it been on all night?
Also, see how well it runs when you are disconnected from the internet. If it's stll slow, then it's something internal, not IP related.

    ok in order

    power supply? 110v ac
the puter was on all night. when i got up it just wouldnt connect to yahoo (my home page) but then did real slow.
what do you mean by see how well it runs when not on the net? it accesses files in the puter ok, but not the net.

So you have onboard video? If you're not sure, you can either open up the box and take a look, or download Everest, and see what kind of stuff you have.

On your power supply, I was looking for how many watts. I'm guessing it's around 320 watts.

As far as running the computer offline, I wanted to troubleshoot, and see how well it runs without being connected to the internet. In otherwords, does it do everything it should, (open files, play music, burn CDs or read CDs) when you are not online? Is this truly a problem with your modem or Internet Provider, or is something on your computer causing slow surfing. That's what I'm wondering. Hope that clears it up. Let us know.

  12. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

    im lost already
dont know what you mean by onboard video or what box.
power supply plugs into the wall. im in america so whatever the US has.
    it opens files fine.
its gotta be a problem with the IE or whatever part of the puter controls it, or the dsl.

  13. eclayton

    eclayton Sgt. Shorts-cough

Well, we don't really know that, since she already ran Spybot and runs Spyware blaster as well.

Laurie, that's a lot of processes to be running all at once. You should go here and run through each step.

But, before you do that, turn off Indexing Service. My Computer, right click C, click on properties, uncheck the box that says "allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching". hit Apply, and check Apply changes to C, files, and subfolders. Hit Ignore All when the box comes up.

This should free up some resources so that you can start cleaning everything else.

If you like, you can turn off System Restore also. It is also a huge resource hog. Since it didn't help you at all, you may as well.

Also, download and run Ad-Aware (if you can).

Let's start there, and see what heppens.

    eclayton Sgt. Shorts-cough

Sorry Laurie, it may not matter. :)
If you think it's IE, you could try a couple things: Uninstall IE, and re-install. Or, download Mozilla Firefox, and see if that runs any better. Let me know if you need help with that. Are you on the "slow computer" now?

  15. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

ok, done that and it appeared to wizz through them quickly. turned off system restore. did you want me to try adaware before the go 'here' bit?

  16. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

yes i only have the one :(

  17. eclayton

    eclayton Sgt. Shorts-cough

If you think you can download it in less then 3 hours, then yes, go ahead and get Ad-Aware, and run it. If it gonna take forever to do that, then go ahead to Optimize XP and start through those steps. There may be a problem with your Page File as well.
I don't doubt that there is some problems with spyware, but if you already ran Spybot, then it may be something for a Hijack This Log, but I'm not qualified to ask you to run that, nor to help sort through it. Let's do some of these steps, and then maybe head over to Spyware Specifiic and see what they say.
Where's Chaslang when you need him? :D

    eclayton Sgt. Shorts-cough

Alucard, you may very well be right, but you haven't offered any solutions as to what she should do, so instead of sitting there critisizing, jump in and help.

You needed swear at me sir. I am on THIS message board, not IM, so of course I don't know what you've told her, but she posted this on THIS message board, so I'm answering her on THIS message board.
Can we calm down a bit, and maybe start over and be friends? :)

    @ Alucard_The_Dex

When working tech related issues it is best to keep all correspondence inside the forum; that way others can see what has been discussed and what solutions have been put forward. We don't use IM here to resolve tech issues. I also agree that this is very likely a malware issue; which is worked inside the Spyware Specific forum by those authorized to assist with such problems.

I also agree with eclayton you need to calm down a bit.

    @ LaurieB

Run through the READ ME FIRST in the Spyware Forum and see what that comes up with.

ok shadow. i got the read first bit. i got to stage 5 where it says download adaware, but my puter wont download anything. :( now what

  22. laurieB

isnt there some way of connecting my puter with someone who knows what there doing?

  23. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

If you have access to another computer, try downloading and burning to a CD and then installing on your computer. Do you have Firefox installed? If you can't get Ad-Aware installed skip that step.

  24. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

not till tomorrow. no i dont have fire fox. there was more than one download recomended, do you mean skip them all, or try one at a time?

  25. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Try them one at a time. If IE won't download, you may want to use another computer to get the downloads, at some point you are going to need to use those. There may be other tools you need to download that aren't in the sticky, depends on what we find lurking on your system. Best bet is to get Firefox installed, since it isn't susceptible to the pitfalls of IE.

Sorry, just saw this; yes someone can connect via Remote Desktop and try to assist you. I've never been any good at doing that myself.

  27. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

ok ill try one at a time. you have to bare in mind that i am very far from anybody. i can use a friends puter to download those suggested but its not exactly 'pop in', more a fifty mile drive

trying now for cwshredder but it say its gonna take 2hrs n 20 mins. when it started it said Kbytes and 7 mins. it just keeps getting slower and longer

  31. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

That's slow. Two things to try

    Winsock XP
    Hoster
    • Unzip Hoster to a convenient folder such as C:\Hoster
    • Run Hoster.exe, click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program

  32. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

ok cancelled cwshredder. and trying winsock. when it starts to download it starts in KB and then goes down in increments to 56 bytes per sec. at the mo it has gone down to 462 bytes per sec, so something is affecting the downloads while they are in proccess

  33. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

    laurieB MajorGeek

just to keep you all up to date. i got as far as #5 on the read first list, but i'm unable to download anything. when the puter tries to download it starts off in KB and reduces speed in increments to 56Bytes per sec!! 2 people tried to send me files over the IM but puter wouldnt do it. i dont know why it wont accept files over the IM, but it might be something to do with the things ive switched off under instruction from verizon, emachines or here. my son was on this puter the afternoon before and i am deeply suspisous that he has something to do with this. it is possible that he has attempted to get around the new password on the content control. that is the only 'new' thing that had happened to my puter. so its a big coincidence that the dayafter changing it, the puter has gone haywire. i just want to say how much i apreciate ALL help, i realise that it is frustrating to deal with someone that often doesnt understand the instructions. much aloha to you all. fyi. i have 80% of my memory still free, and my cpu is minimal. the taskmanager doesnt show up anything odd. :)

Alhoa, Laurie. Got back from the base a little while agao.

To boot into Safe mode, when you reboot, start tapping the F8 key repeatedly when the first screen appears, if the Windows Screen with the moving bar appears you waited too long. A menu will appear shorty giving you several options. You want Safe Mode with Networking.
