Putting CDRom drivers on startup disk

My friend changed his hard drive because the old one went dead. I am trying to get it going for him but the windows 98 startup disk with generic drivers for the CDRom don't work. I can't find a name on the drive, just 45X (the X is squiggly). I think it might be a sony or mitsumi though.
How can I get drivers on a startup disk or make the bios accept the one on the startup disk?
Or, if anyone knows where I can get startup disks with a variety of drivers to try I would be forever in their debt.
Or if anyone has any other Ideas to get windows loaded I will appreciate that also.
It's an old PII 266 with 128 Ram made by CTX
    Thanks!

Ok, if I have you right, your booting from floppy, but the CD is not working. Very rare, actually, I have yet to have that happen to me, FYI, especially with a brand name drive like Sony or Mitsumi (hence my reason for #1 below) Couple ideas in order of what I would try:

1: Make sure the BIOS is detecting it properly or at all. Theres always a chance the CDROM is a dead soldier. Could bring your CDROM drive over and set it up as a test.

2: Boot from the CD! Shouldnt need to boot from a floppy, you should be able to set CDROM as first boot device and run install right from CD.

3: If not, then were back to booting from floppy (assuming CD drive is still good of course) We have a couple boot disk utilities:

Ultimate Boot Disk, free and popular, best bet:

You can try My Boot Disk, though if you have gotten this far down I would consider hardware failure, ide connection, cable or the drive itself, but heres that one.

That should do it, let us know how you make out.

I got the boot disk and I see the win98 logo screen pop up and then it goes to C: prompt.
From there I'm lost. what should I do next?
Thanks for the help Major and others.

The Boot disk that you are using may make a Viture Drive.
If your CD drive is normaly D: Now it will be E:
So type e: ENTER than type Dir you should see all files of the cd or Type setup to start your new install.

I went through the whole alphabet and didn't find the cd so I don't know.
    Any other ideas?

    I'm gonna kill him!!

Try as I might I couldn't get the CDRom working so I decided to take a peek inside.
There it was, the CDRom cable unattached and wadded up inside.
Funny...I attached it and windows installed like a ****d ape.
    Thanks for the help everyone!
