Puzzling Desktop Icon Behavior

This mystery is not critical, just annoying and puzzling. Occasionally one or more desktop shortcut icons disappear....no problem, I just make another one. Then, sometime within a couple of days or weeks, one of vanished ones peeks a little bit into the desktop at the right edge. So I can then drag it back in. What's going on?

This occurs on both my win98 and winme machines.

 

Are you by any chance running dual monitors ? The reason I ask is that when have dual monitors setup you can drag icons off to the other monitor provided you have extended your desktop to the secondary monitor. Another thing you may want to try is to use the auto arrange icons option. You can do this by: right clicking on the desktop -select "Arrange Icons By" - select auto arrange. This feature is off by default in all versions of Windows.

no, not running 2 monitors....also auto arrange destroys my clustering arrangement.....by the way, it just evaporated 2 icons on my last boot, a few minutes ago....also have examined the machine with 2 anti virus utilities and 2 mal ware utilities...nothing (in 5 years of intense use on the internet, I've never gotten a virus....lots of spyware tho.)

this is caraazy.... someone out there has experienced this...how about checking in here....thanks

 

What is your clustering arrangement? Try sorting them by the name menu option and see if they re-appear.
