    Hello,

Having scanned the googley for an answer I could not find anything for my specific problem.

I am trying to enable QoS settings for my router but the options are confusing and I don't want to screw up my internet. I have a slow connection as I live in the boondocks, a 1.26 line. for one person this is fine, but recently I have had to take in a houseguest who now shares my connection. They insist on streaming videos all the time which destroys my skype connection and my online gaming. When they are on I get a speedtest of 0.20 instead of what it should be. I want to enable the QoS to either give my computer priority or give priority to gaming and voice with video third. My router is a D-Link 2640b and has the option but there are many settings, here are some screenshots of the options:

    Wireless QoS Screen 2: http://i.imgur.com/bfVwUnO.jpg

I should mention that I am wired in to one of the lan ports and my guest uses wireless.

I gathered that I should assign static IP's to every machine connected but there seems to be no option for this, however in the initial setup there is a checkbox to "assign static IP", but it looks like it's just for one pc. I read the manual but it isn't the same router screen as I use.

    Thanks for reading.

The first problem you have here is that the wireless quality of service settings look like they are designed to prioritise wireless transmission and not upstream (internet) transmission. So these are useless for your needs.

The second problem as I see it from the screenshots is that your router will only change the Terms of Service bit and not actually manage the traffic. The third problem is that your router, being a small residential model, might not have the required resources to effectively prioritise and queue traffic even if it is possible.

The best suggestion I can give you is to talk to your house guest and ask them to ease off when you are trying to Skype.

The other suggestion I have is if you have an old computer you could install a free firewall operating system like PFSense which can provide traffic shaping services.

Thanks for the reply. D'you think a different router with better QoS options would help any?

    - Cheers
