Q's about Spybot installation

I'm using Win98SE, on dialup... so download time is a huge factor...
I already d/l'd and saved Spybot. When I tried to install it, it wanted to go online and tried to d/l another huge file (probably the library?). It was going to take far too long for dialup, so I cancelled.

Now I've d/l's the Spybot Update and saved it as well. So here're my questions:

When I try to install Spybot again, how do I avoid that attempt at d/l'ing online?

How should I proceed relative to having the Update available?

I'd like to know what's going to happen Before it happens, so I can be prepared and not expect to be online for another huge d/l file.

    Thanks.

If I remember right the installer asks if you want to update the descriptions right away or later. Try unchecking that box.

I believe you're right, now that I think about it. But how do I use the Update file properly? Will that d/l the library separately, so that I can install the library separately?

    Thanks!

Spybot downloads and installs the update automatically when you click on the Update button.

When you install you can also uncheck the extra languages and skins.
You can choose what to add in the updates, too. I usually don't update the help files or tea timer as I don't use them.

    This did the trick!

But now I find that there is a definite conflict between Spybot and another piece of software, where the conflict crashes both programs!* I'm sure that it's due to TeaTimer (if that's the only monitor utility in Spybot). If I re-install Spybot, what do I do to avoid any real-time monitoring? I just want something to go back and check for the nuisance stuff at my discretion, sorta like Ad-Aware.

(*I'm aware that software pkgs don't always play well together! So I try to work with the ones I like to make them get along!)

    And one more thing:
Since I install Spybot without the automatic updating (on dialup), can I go back to retrieve the updates (when I have access to high-speed connection) in a package which allows me to install the updates at my convenience?

    Thanks!

As Steve_East9 said, you can get the updates from MG, save it to a CD (or floppy if both PC's have that drive) and just transport it back to your PC for install.

That Updater from MG: Is that just a utility to d/l the update files, or is that the most current library from Spybot?

Sorry to be so dense over this, but... I'd run the updater, and be able to save the d/l'd file on my pocket drive, and then install into the program later? Does the Updater just d/l the file, or does it actually try to install the updates? I'm looking ahead, trying to understand how it works, to avoid more trouble for myself!

    Thanks.

This is the description of the Update file you recommended; I had already downloaded it. I thought it was a program to use for future updates to the detector library. Now that you are correcting my understanding (and I thank you for this!), does this mean that I can just run ("click on") that file from my pocket drive and it will search out and "fix" the files in Spybot, wherever Spybot resides on my hard drive?

Please excuse my denseness - I really AM dense today - I have some sort of head congestion which gives relevance to the expression "full of s**t", which in this case means mucus (I guess that's more than you wanted to know...?)

    And I sincerely mean "thanks"!

Thanks for all the help, and especially the patience!

I finally re-installed Spybot, but without checking the TeaTime and IE protection boxes. I also did the update file, and things worked beautifully (as you knew they would!). I ran a search, it found two somethings which I didn't recognize but were in red, plus a bunch of tracking cookies. I wiped them all out. I'm surprised that I wasn't more infected than that...

So, now, being almost at the end of my tutorial --
    1. How do I review any activity history?
    2. There was a warning at the beginning about a possible conflict with Lavasoft (Ad-Aware). Is this serious? Is there anything I should do, or just ignore it? Do I really need Ad-Aware with Spybot?
    3. Can Spybot run in the background, or is it best to leave it alone while it's working?
    4. Upon installation, I unchecked the IE protection, because I don't want anything running in the background all the time. What sort of advantage is the IE protection?

Thanks very much for all your help!

Thanks for the answers and recommendations. I'll go in and see about setting up that IE protection.

I've got something new in the Tray -- InstallShield Update Manager.
I don't know why it's there, how it got there, what it does, and what it's connected with. I sorta think it has something to do with SpyBot since that's the only serious thing I've installed recently.

Can anyone identify this? I don't want things operating in the background unless I know about them beforehand... !

    Thanks. :confused

    Thanks, Guys... :wave

Now that I don't need to worry about what it's doing (and now that I'm reminded about CCleaner), I just wonder What put it there? Is this something from Spybot or CCleaner? :confused
