I have two quad PIII xeon systems: an HP proliant DL580 and a Dell Poweredge 6450.

The Proliant has 700Mhz xeons (SL49S) with 2048 kb L2. I could put 2.5-3.5 GB RAM in it.

Would this system be faster than a 2.8 GHz P4 system, with an intel 865 chipset, 1024kb L2 cache, and 2GB DDR-400 RAM?

    Its an interesting comparison, because 4 X 700 = 2,800 = 2.8 GHz. The quad system has 8192 kb total L2, but only a 100MHz fsb. The P4 has an 800Mhz fsb, but only 1024 kb L2.

I don't have much server experience. Is there a linux distro that would work with these quad cpu systems?

I think the p4 2.8 would be faster.
