quake 3 lag on decent computer :(

I've been trying to get a decent game of quake 3 for so long. First I bought it back on my old computer, but it lagged too much online. Then I bought my friends for my new computer too laggy back then. Now I got a new computer a gig of ram ati radeon x800xl, brand new quake 3, 3.2 ghz processor, I go online to play I shoot a rocket two seconds later it shoots. Why so laggy? everyone else seems to play fine am i missing something?! I have 1.32 release and I gave my specs to my computer, single player works fine just multiplayer, do I need to download mods or something what is wrong, please help.

 

The "lag" on multiplayer would be from the connection, that would be why singleplayer is fine. What is your Ping? What is your connection speed?

 

my connection is 768 k, cable, kinda in and out at times, but most of the time it's fine, works great with ps2 and xbox live, also with games like counterstrike both source and regular, my ping is up around 80s? On cs it's around 15 to 30?
