Feeling pretty proud for our neighbouring State's achievement. The Great Barrier Reef has taken out one of world tourism's most coveted awards. :highfive

The Great Barrier Reef - the world's largest living organism - was voted the best destination by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) as part of its Tourism for Tomorrow awards, at a ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal.

The Reef topped more than 130 entries from 40 countries across seven continents.

The Great Barrier Reef marine park is the world's largest heritage site. The award was the culmination of efforts by industry, government and environmental stakeholders to ensure the GBR is protected for future generations.

"Marine operators and industry organisations, including QTIC, have worked intensely and cooperatively with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) to ensue the long term sustainability of the reef while building a world class tourism industry" Mr Gschwind said.

"At a time when environmental concerns are rising, not least over the impact of climate change, this is shining example of how the tourism industry, government and conservation can work together in addressing the challenges."

    :clap Good on you Queensland!:celebrate]

More tourists as a result, here in my home town of Cairns, (home on and off since 1988).
We have around 1,500,000 a year already and 1500 people moving north, a month, from New South Wales and Victoria states to Queensland.

It took me 30 years to move north from Melbourne to Sydney, and I've beem moving north ever since. :D Bazza

Goes to show that when people care enough, everyone (with work and lifestyle) and the environment and its wildlife benefits. Congrats again. I've really proud of you "Banana Benders"LOL

It is really beautiful all around. Haven't been up there for 2-3 years as I've been elsewhere instead...used to make it a yearly pilgrimage during my old uni days (great after exams), and always enjoyed doing the islands and the Reef with some scuba diving. Will head up there at some time because of friends who are always clobbering me to visit.

    (I'm jealous of you.)

    Cheers

How Difficult would it be for a Yank to move there?

Meaning, are the persons moving simply migrating within, or from without?

Both. If you're serious about moving to Aussie land, just go through the normal channels. We have quite a few American residents down here...God luv 'em.

    Cheers

Beware house prices are skyrocketing in OZ, particularly Cairns, the Gold Coast, and the mining states.
Wages are not as good as the US (don't forget the currency differences).:cry
If you have a skill that OZ needs you shouldn't have any problem. :cool
Health costs are much much cheaper than in the USA.

Nearly 2,000,000 links to Cairns, where I live.
