Hi ya'll! :wave Well, somehow, after 3 months I was finally able to get Windows XP re-installed on my Dell desk top after a vicious mbr infection. However, I lost several drivers in the process. One of them is the ethernet driver I need for my DSL modem. I found the driver download at Dell.com. I'm using my daughter's Dell desk top in the meantime. My question is, can I download the driver to my daughter's pc then copy the driver file on a cd and install it onto my pc? Or, another option maybe...I connected her pc to my modem using the ethernet cable and had no problem connecting to the 'net. Can I copy her driver to a CD and use it, since I used her Windows XP install disk to re-install my Windows? Oh, I also have a Sandisk flash drive. Could I use it instead of copying to a CD?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

You can copy the driver to any source you want to, I would recommend the flash drive though as it will be quicker and will not cost a CD.

Okay...how do I copy the driver? All I can find to do is update, uninstall, etc. There isn't a "copy" choice. (I should have known this would be another headache maker! :cry

You need to save the driver to your computer rather than opening it in internet explorer, which is what I believe you are doing now. The file will save as a .exe file. You need to use windows to copy this in the normal way to the external drive, then copy it onto the target computer, then run the file on the target computer.

I was attempting to copy the driver that is installed on my daughter's pc.

ARGH!! I should have known this would cause me headaches again!! On Dell.com, I located the modem driver download, but when I click on it, I get an error message: "Cannot Start Application"..."Cannot continue. The application is improperly formatted. Contact the application vendor for assistance." Is there some other place where I can find an ethernet controller driver for my Dell Dimension E510?

Please download and save the zip file below. It contains the driver program you need to run on the target machine.

Hmmm...I downloaded the zip file. Then I plugged in the flash drive. I received these error messages:
"The disk in drive F needs to be formatted" I clicked OK.
"The disk in drive F cannot be formatted"
"Windows was unable to complete the format"

So frustrating! So close...and yet...so far!

    Oh...HAPPY DANCE...HAPPY DANCE!!! :-D

I couldn't get the flash drive to work, so I decided to try the CD route. It worked!!! I'm using my Dell to post this!

In my device manager, along with the ethernet controller, there are several other items with the yellow exclamation marks on them. But I think now that I have this pc up and running I can go to Dell.com to reinstall those drivers.

First though, I'm going straight to Anti-Malware Bytes and download some protective software! Don't want to ever go through this nightmare again! :-D

collinsl...in regards to the "Floppy disk seek failure" error message I get...
That didn't work. If I end up having to purchase an external floppy to stop that error message, is it okay now for me to go to Mozy.com and transfer my docs and pics back to this pc?

Do you have any other instructions for me, i.e. specific software I should install, settings I should change, etc?

For every computer I own (currently 7 in the house), I collect all the drivers if there are no yellow !s nor red Xs and burn them to a CD. Should the computer go down, I can pop in the CD, fire up device manager and point it to the CD to find the driver it needs for anything that might be missing or incorrect.

I use a program that used to be free but then changed the name and is now pay. I don't have anything newer than XP installed so it works for me. It may not function correctly on the newer versions of windows.
