    hello i was doing some "cleaning" and stumbled across Microsoft visual c + + 2008 redistributable - x6 9.0.21022 .....the thing that concerned me was the amount of space it uses 4,052.00 mb....honestly i am not even sure what this program does , but it seems kinda odd when basically every other program uses under 300 mb . i also have another program Microsoft visual c + + 2008 redistributable - x6 9.0.30729.17 that uses 10.28 mb.....and a Microsoft visual c + + 2008 ATL UPDATE KB973924 - X6 9.0.30729.4148......in addition there are 2 programs Microsoft visual c + + 2005 redistributable (both about 5.25 mb) and 1 update....sorry if this is confusing but does it appear something here is wrong? is it safe to remove? are both the 2005 and 2008 necessary? like i said i'n mot even sure what this program does , but any help would be very much appreciated!! :confused

    thanks ,
    gatorrich

    These are legitimate programs LET THEM ALONE!

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...4391-8a4d-074b9f2bc1bf&displaylang=en&pf=true

    Remove any of these and you risk breaking current programs that now work. Some old programs might not work with the latest version, that's why you do not remove the 2005 version and hope the program will work with the 2008 version.

    People cleaning out things have managed to do lots of damage to computers.
    I suggest if you want to clean, you let a safe program like CCleaner handle the job.

    Avoid the temptation to remove things UNLESS you have an image on an external hard drive or DVDs that you can use to restore your computer.

    thank you for your help! i would never just "uninstall" any program without knowing what it was , i was just very suspect to why the size was so significantly higher than all other programs? seemed kinda fishy.......thanks again for your help , i will use the cleaner u mentioned. :)

    Microsoft visual c + + 2008 redistributable is not part of windows xp home.
    they are files added when you installed a program (for me it was nero 10 for vista)
    I belive it is a part of a back door trojin added to a bit torrent for nero 10 added with it was net 3.5 which is also not nessessary for windows xp home.

    I state home because im on my laptop my desk top moniter is down and i cant check for pro.

    redistributable is files from the net c++ 2008 that come with the software development. these files are refranced from a software package which was installed on your computer and were included with the install of a piticular program. such as office 2010 which is large program in itself.

    vista is developed in visualbasic.net and C++ as a studio package and this software is more then likly developed in vista and is dependent on the redistributed newer development language libaries of net and C++ and therefor inorder for the program to work the installer needs to gave the libaries available to them and are installed with them if nessessary.

    windows xp was not developed in net.

    if you have downloded torrent files it is possable the c++ libaries installed on your xp computer are addition files added to the software to create a backdoor utility (trojin) to access your computers information without your knowledge.

    If you are having issues with windows update and not updating certain files or stating they were updated but returning to update and they redownload then you should clean boot and not install the programs using these files.

    HUH... Vista or XP are not developed in Visual Basic or visualbasic.net or .net respectively they are in C for the kernel and some aspects in C++ and are closed source language in nature.

    Visual Basic and .Net are seperate programming languages that Microsoft offer and are legit and not malware or a backdoor trojan, both are XP, Vista and Win7 compatible but are again not part of the OS language.

    Stating its a trojan off hand without any other issues going on with the OS is likely to lead the user to uninstall something thats legit and needed for another application and could lead to a long troubleshooting period as apps will start failing.

    While this is linking to VS C++ 2010 the ethos is the same as 2008 version HERE and HERE and will tell you what this app does.

    @gatorrich can you post a screenshot of the file or folder size for Microsoft visual c + + 2008 redistributable? likely cna find this easily in Add/Remove?

    I would likely leave them alone as Plodr mentions as I have around 11 different versions of this Redistributable on my Windows 7 x64 PC and all are verified as fine.

    As you state you are runing windows 7

    windows xp however was developed before .net

    my personal copy clean booted and updated by microsoft update does not contain any 3.5 net or c++ 2008 at all .

    the posibility of downloading a package with hacker where redistributed DLL dependencies for newly developed operating system libaries is notable for the very reason mention above.

    in addition upgrading to vista or windows 7 allows the structure[Trojin] to be hidden while not having the dll's and needing the redistributed versions of the packages and the unability for microsoft update to reconise the package properly and creating errors effectivly highlights the pential for this isuuse to be a Trojin.

    Hi but sadly I also run XP, Vista, Win7 and Linux so kinda have a grasp of the various OSes and have grown up and been on the techbetas for XP et al so know the files that they use fairly well.

    .net has nothing to do with the programming of Windows XP or XP its a seperate application thats classed as a 3rd party application, althought its a Microsoft one.

    For it to be a "Trojan" then there would likely be some other PC anomalies other than a file size descrepancy as thats yet to be determined by the OP, for this a run of the Malware Read and Run me would be an advisable option other than saying its an out and out "Trojan" as you dont know that the user is using Torrents or has Nero 10? unless you have a power of prediction, in that case I'm impressed.

    Please explain that in more detail? as upgrading an OS doesnt automatically turn a Trojan to be in a hidden state, the very nature of malware and the sub catagory of Trjoans is that they are hidden a much as possible to start with, unless you are one of those merry band of malware experts that can spot these fake files at 1000yds.

    upgrading or running the operating system a trojin was developed in such as .net or C ++ which when installed requies system dll's from the upgraded os [vista, win 7] the files exsist and there is no need to use a redistributed package from another sorce aka MSI.installer.dependencies. {Hidden}

    While installing the same[trojin] in an OS[winxp] which requires dependicies [files] from an upgraded os [vista / win 7] that do not exist and having the dependent files installed through the MSI.installer.{not as hidden}

    Windows update rasies a flag when it seems to update yet continues to update the same files without understanding that they have been updated.{There is somthing afoot}

    Additionaly, researching this error raises another in that windows can not find the cab file to update the files in the correct loction.{another thing afoot}

    aka runing on a machine microsoft update thinks is vista and is winxp.

    does not nessessarly mean it is a trojin
    mearly rasies a flag
    by stating the obivios method of entry aka Torrent , PTPfile share download and installation and the fact windows xp home is not required to use redistributed file C++ 2008 or .net 3.5
    a potential problem could be if the Torrent or PTP transaction had taken place. [Nero 10 being just one of many potential possabilities]

    In my case using win xp clean boot and having the issue raised identified the lack of attention from a new hacker to backword compatability.

    i should additionaly point out a brief discription in my case of the files needing to be udated were remote access and vunerability to it
    assumeing windows was not able to overwrigth the files because it was in use. {the flag}

    gatorrich, it is hard to discover what programs actually install C++ but I did find out in one thread that Comodo Firewall does. I'm not sure if any other Comodo products install this.
    As pointed out previously, do not remove. These are legitimate programs.

    If you start reading in forums, you will see threads by people who did a little bit too much when they cleaned and are left with a broken computer. It is better to have something good on thaty you might not need than to remove just one thing only to discover that you needed it for your computer to work.

    Hi

    Cheers for the screenshot, I would be thinking that the reported size in add/remove a a little corrupt as that figure should if it was in the GB range something like 4.05GB and not listed in MB and as that version did cause some other issues on some PCs with reporting problems and install errors then its possible to be a part corrupted install or the developer who added the C++ package to their app typed in the wromg data for the install and it likely should have been 4.05MB

    As Plodr mentions it is difficult to know what application the VS C++ Redist 2008 and that version of it relates too, you could uninstall that one and test your applications to see if one fails then re-install it, but that could lead to other issues.

    Outside chance you could fix that install by installing an old VB C++ Redist package but need to install the exact version as in x86 9.0.21022 and this is the closest I have found in version 9.0.21022.8 HERE but its a chance you take.
