I have DSL. Currently I have a DSL modem plugged into a desktop PC that is also hooked into a 5 port router that goes to two other PC's via CAT5.

Question is: How can I eliminate the main PC and access the DSL on demand?

I want to be able to turn on the laptop in the living room and somehow connect to the DSL without having to go start up the desktop, log on to the net, etc.

    Thanks Pal's.

Check with your router manufacturer (or just explore the setup) to find out if your router will do PPPoE authentication. If it will, you can set your modem up as a bridge, and use the router to handle authentication. It will then connect whenever it gets a connection request from any computer.

btw: if you have winpoet installed on your main computer (you have to log in to get online), your modem is already set up as a bridge.

I see what you mean. I would need a modem with a CAT5 output or phone line output. The one I have is USB.

    Thanks for the info.

Those are some good links. I'm trying to get my provider, (centurytel) to tell me what is compatible with their service.

usually the modems have both jacks on the back. Check to be sure that your modem doesn't already have an ethernet port. What's the model number of your current modem. Also, for a basic router, I'd recommend a D-Link 604, supports most everything and it's cheap, under $50.

The one I have now is the Alcatel stingray. It has nothing on it but the power and USB cord.

They emailed me and suggest the Westell 2100 and 2400 modem/router combinations and the Netopia 3341.

Looking on ebay there's plenty of both for fairly cheap.

The 2400 has a built in router so I could ditch the Linksys I have now and maybe gain some performance.

The Router part of the Modem/Router Combos usually "St***k".

If Internet is important to you it is silly to get "Junk" in order to save $10-$20.

    :)

Are you wireless or connected by cable?
Plug DSL modem directly into router WAN port; then plug PC into port 1[router]; Laptop in Port 2 [router].
Wireless: install wireless PCI card and drivers; run new connection wizard [select following: connect to net; set up connect manually; connct using Brdbnd that is always on; Finish]. This should connect you to web w/o PC on.

    Best of luck, Ski

I'm wired. The modem only has USB output and the router has no USB input.

I got one coming from the bay that should do what all ahve suggested.
