i have looked at quite a few routers and they all say 'wireless', does this mean just wireless or can it connect to pc's via wires and via wireless?

    e.g.
    'LINKSYS WRT54GSUK WIRELESS 125MBPS ROUTER'

Accepts both ...wireless reception and hard wire ( four port).

Actually SOme can be just wireless on their own, although these are normally called Wireless Access Points such as the Linksys WAP54G. Most places will have some form of technical details. Just look for how many Network Ports (RJ45) it says it has.

You should also make sure you get the right type of router such as an adsl router(including modem) or cable router (no modem just WAN port) but I'm sure you knew that.

How does your modem connect to the internet ?

Via a TV looking type cable or via the phone line. ?

If your not sure please phone or email NTL to make sure.

NTL says they supply you with the modem (cable) ...that then plugs(via cat5e wire) into a router ...the one you mentioned will allow four wired connections and also accept wireless input .....

Ok if tim is right then :

You need a Cable Router. so you need to make sure it has an RJ45 (WAN) input not an RJ11 phone type one. then you just take the cable thats going from the cable modem at the moment and plug it into the WAN port on the router (instead of into the back of your computer probably) and plug the other computers into the ports on the back (probably numbered 1 to 4)
and set up any wireless you need.
