If it requires 512 MB of ram, then you need 512 MB of ram to play.
Your video ram, is only for video.

Some have said, you can increase your pagefile, to compensate the lack of ram, but I find that this doesn't work out, all that well. :)

Adding more RAM is not very expensive.

Welcome to Major Geeks.:) ;)
If you are running XP and only have 256megs of RAM, you probably only have around 100 megs free, after loading all the stuff at startup.:p

As others have suggested, you need more RAM. I would add another 512mbytes, at least, to give you a total of 768megs.

FreeRam XP pro (runs on all Windows OS's) is a good RAM manager.
I even use it on my XP Pro laptop, fitted with 2gigs of RAM.

XP can benefit from a RAM manager despite what others say, IMHO, (and my daily use), even with 2 gigs of RAM.
