You hear alot of Americans ALWAYZ thank god for whatever they have achived in life, which would be because its a very religious country,
and i was just wondering.... most of Australia's population is cathloic not all but most.
Are most Americans Mormans or is that just a salt lake city thing???

please someone set me straight on this issue

    thanks in advance:)

There are large Mormon populations in certain states (Utah being the highest by far), however Mormons in general are a religious minority on the larger scale :)

The largest single denomination in America is Catholicism. Protestants make up the largest number of Americans, however there are literally thousands of Protestant denominations (Episocopal, Baptist, Jehova's Witness, etc..)

Hope that helps a little bit

The main reason salt lake city has the highest mormon population is because there is a mormon college there. I know a few mormons who went to my high school and believe or not they all went there. I think the thanking God thing is well at least for me you pretty much just learn that from you parents and siblings. I am Catholic and these people you see today that say they are scientologists and aethiests are just looking for attention in my opinion.

that is the case in little old Oz too.

The main reason Salt Lake City has the highest mormon population is because the pioneer settlers there in 1847 were Mormon.I think the mormon college came as a later result of settlements, not the other way around :)

    True.

As far as christian countries, we pretty much live in a post-Christian world. While most of the "west" used to be almost monolithically Christian, that's far from true today. Still lots of them left, but as ASUS so gracefully alluded to, many that claim to be don't even know what the Bible says, much less try to live by it. More a case of a social designation than a personal comittment.

my mums a mormon and so i was baptised one too although i dont go to church.... i believe if your a good person and you try your best in everything, you are doing the right thing and if you always remember and to keep love, hope and faith in your hearts...you cant go wrong.
well at least thats what i think, but im sure theres others with different opinions which everyone is entitled too.

I agree, and it is kind of sad. So much decision making based on hearsay, rather than reading the facts for yourself first, today. Kinda like the Vista v XP and Windows v Linux debates we regularly see ;)

@brksta....those are good morals and ethics for everyone to have, agreed, (to be a good person and try your best in everything) but my faith determines that nothing goodI do myself will earn me the right to a place in Heaven. That comes from believeing in Christ :)

agreed and i also agree with the second sentence, im just equiring all religions at the moment and finding out what is right for me, but at the moment the only thing that feels right in my heart is that i know there is a god and i know there is a reason why we are here but everything keeps telling me to stick by fate coz everything happens for a reason.

im honestly not trying to start an arguement with what is right or wrong with anyone just was enquiring about mormons

Thanks for the info on the settlers Lev :)

I don't think anyone did think you were starting an argument - it is an interesting subject for discussion :)

I guess you could argue fate is the same as "leaving it in God's hands" and everything does happen for a reason as God is trying to help us grow in our understadning of the world. So those who say those things to you may or may not realize their words still have spiritual implications :)

LOL....not your body telling you that you are tired then? ;)

I prefer to change the "R" word from Religion to Relationship (with God). "Religion" to me is a set of rules that have to be followed to the letter. That's not my thing, personally :)

This is a very sensible outlook on a very touchy subject!

One that i share with you Brooke.....although i have never been a greatly religious person, i do believe in god, and also that our ancestors and forefathers are preparing for our immenent arrival one day!

With some of the stuff-ups i have made in life, there is definately someone up there looking after me...hehe

    Regards...

I believe there are unanswerable questions and that our brain doesn't like them, so it spends years of people's lives and brain resources making up answers that are more and more complicated. The reason for trying to be a good person, as far as I can tell from my own experience, is because it works better. Life, which I like, has a better chance to develop and grow when things are working. Whether life exists or not can be a point of lively discussion, but it is irrelevant for the most part, because it can never get beyond the theoretical. The stomach's growl has a very high level of authority.

There has been a lot of controversy about religion in the US for quite some time, a group not wanting prayer in schools spurred it I believe. Now it's gotten completely out of hand. There are some who protest displaying the nativity scene at public or government buildings at Christmas time. Heard now they want (in god we trust) taken off the money. On the other hand there is a section in the US referred to as the bible belt, through the southern states where religion is taken very seriously.
I was baptized catholic and am ashamed to admit it any more with all the molestations that have gone on by priests.
It's gotten so you don't know what to say when someone sneezes.

I still say "bless you" even at work, where "Holiday Trees" are the correct phraseology. In my book, respect is a two way street. I can respect people have different beliefs than mine, but equally they have to respect mine in God and Christ and the Holy Ghost. I'm not forcing anyone to subscribe to my way of thinking, but just to allow me to be myself in that belief, to the point I don;t have to reconsider every little thing I say to ensure it isn't against someone else's opinion on faith.

"Geshundheit" is a fine alternative to "bless you", but very few in the US have direct German lineage, and it's origins are actually Jewish, which has a greater faith-basis and list of "rules" than any faith I have personally encountered. So to me, it kinda defeats the object of skirting around "bless you".

Well, you could just be grumpy and say "Cover your mouth!". :D

I just say "bless you". PC hasn't invaded the south as heavily as elsewhere. It's not uncommon for a sales clerk to say goodbye by saying "Have a blessed day." Nobody seems to get bent out of shape. A friendly greeting or parting should be taken in the spirit given, whether it's something you personally believe in or not. This used to be considered simple politeness.

I agree. I assisted a lady Friday morning I found on the sidewalk at 7:00am sleeping outside my office. Later, as she went on her way she said "God bless you" . Man, I felt so humbled that she even THOUGHT to say that to me, for the simple thing I had done, when her life is so much harder than mine. I didn't feel I deserved the "blessing" she gave me at all. Outside of a church setting, I have never had that said to me. I don't know exactly what it meant to her, but to me, it meant everything.

LOL, cover your mouth is good. I exaggerated just a tad, I say what I want, haven't been reprimanded yet. California is a diverse and sue happy place.
I've noticed most street people say bless you a lot, and so what if that dollar you give them is for liquor, if thats what they need maybe it quiets the voices for a time.

I won;t give money directly - my work is directly relating to solve alcohol and drug related issues; but I will gladly give food, warm beverages, clothing, blankets etc, or direct people to our shelters where they can get hot showers and clean stuff.
