Question about Windows Messenger

I was working on a client's PC, they were having issues with Windows Messenger (Windows XP Pro SP3) so I configured it with my Hotmail user name and account info for testing purposes. I fixed the problem, but now my name and info appears to be "locked in" and I can't seem to find a way to remove it. :-o Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! After reading the steps at the link you provided, it's no surprise that I couldn't find a simple way to do it.... jeez! I knew there was a reason I didn't use any of the Microsoft messenger apps! I use Yahoo! and the all purpose Trillian for my messaging needs....

We in the Malware Removal forum normally tell users to get rid of Windows Messenger when we see it in the logs.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Thanks Doc! I always take all of your advice under serious advisement! I'll be using the "Disable/Remove Windows Messenger" tool in the future. IMO, it's a good thing that WindowsLive has come along with a completely separate messenger. You mention MSN Messenger; is it more-or-less interchangeable with Windows Messenger w/ WinXP, or Windows Live Messenger in Win7/Vista? Can a Hotmail account be used with MSN Messenger the same way it would be used with XP's Messenger or Vista/7 Live Messenger?

I think that the below combined quotes from different sources should answer the main points of your questions.

MSN Messenger is an instant messaging client for Windows (and some other platforms), targetted at the home-user. It offers a lot of personalisation options (adding your own emoticons, backgrounds, etc) to customise your chatting experience and express yourself like you want.

Windows Messenger is another instant messaging client but runs only on the Windows XP platform and later, Windows 2000. This IM client is targetted at corporations and offers a more clean, pro look. Windows Messenger is more tightly integrated with applications such as Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express, or the Remote Assistance feature of Windows XP. It can connect to the Communications Service and Exchange Instant Messaging.

MSN Messenger is Microsoft’s messenger application that is included in the Microsoft Network’s list of services, along with Hotmail. For over a decade, MSN Messenger has fulfilled this role nicely. That is until Microsoft decided to rebrand MSN, and go with the name Windows Live in late 2005. MSN Messenger was then replaced by a new messaging application, called Windows Live Messenger.

Windows Live Messenger’s development is still ongoing to this day. MSN Messenger, on the other hand, had its last version in 2005, and has not been updated ever since. Despite this, some people still prefer to use MSN Messenger instead of Windows Live Messenger. This is because MSN Messenger provides a simpler and cleaner look compared to Windows Live Messenger.
