I had a co-worker install Windows XP Pro (32bit) on my computer. Come to find out, it's not a valid copy. I HAVE a valid copy disc but I can't install it because of a stupid error. Ok, No Problem...

My Question: I also have the Valid CD key that goes with the disk. Is there a way I can use the good info of my Valid CD to replace the bad info so I can update my computer and get the fixes I need? Remember, I can't even get to the setup part of the disk because of the error so formatting is out of the question. I'm looking for a way to show Windows Update that I have a good copy of windows so it'll let me update. How can I do this?

Thank you so much for replying...

Is your Valid CD of XP, the same type as your co-worker installed as in XP Pro or do you have XP Home, an OEM XP as in one from HP, DELL etc?

If the XP you have is different to the one installed then the answer is NO, you will have to install your Valid CD and key, but if they are the same versions ( do note tho their are many versions of XP in which a key from one will not work on another version, eg. XP Home key will not work for XP Pro, XP OEM will not work on Retail versions of XP and Volume Licence Keys dont work on XP Pro, Home and OEM )

but this info may or may not help http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=328874
