...running XPsp2. Wanting to simply switch to Dell wireless desktop mouse from regular Dell optical mouse. How does the wireless mouse get synched to its Dell pc. Does Windows do it, does a wizard 'install' it, or is it done from initial mouse commands?

Just plug it in and it will work. If it's USB, you can plug it in anytime but if it is using the PS/2 port you will have to shut down your PC, plug it in and restart it. Windows will then recognize it as a mouse. It will have basic mouse functions (point, click, etc.) under Windows but in order to use any special mouse features like programmable buttons you will have to install the mouse software.
