    Hi!

I have bits of pieces of stuff from the CD "WordPerfect Office 2000". I have just the basic installation of WordPerfect 9 and Quattro Pro 9. I very rarly use the programs, but have had to reinstall the CD and find that the programs crash almost every time.

The rare time that I use WordPerfect 9 is for personal notes. The Quattro Pro 9, I've used to make a sheet including 2 columns of information, kind of like what you would see in a newspaper, or shopping list.

Is there a free program out there that I can download to replace the aging CD, as I'd hate to purchase a new CD that I wouldn't use, or wouldn't know how to use, I barely know how to use this one! lmao

    Thanks for any suggestions!
    :)

You mean is it available somewhere "For Free?"

No, WordPerfect is not available "legally" for FREE; as far as I know, anyway. However you can get the WordPerfect 12 Productivity Pack CD for like $3.95 in this auction on Ebay which includes WordPerfect 12 - The Oxford Pocket English Dictionary - Clipbook and PerfectScript.

The auction supposedly ends on Jul-23-06 17:18:53 PDT however the eBay auctioneer "digipulseinc" has 32 available so you might want to save the "View seller's other items" to your favorites for future reference!

I mean it may not be FREE but you can get WordPerfect 12 there for like the price of two cups of coffee! ;)

    Good Luck

Hi! Thanks for your reply COMPUABLE, sorry, I apologize, no I wasn't referring to a free WordPerfect CD. I didn't make myself clear about that. With all the wonders of the internet, I was wondering if there was a free program available that I could download legally. Something similar to WordPerfect that someone has created, free for use, without all the bells and whistles (as well as Quattro).

I don't mind if there's advertising in the free program, as I realize nothing's for free. I could probably just use WordPad for the WordPerfect, but not sure what would create 2 columns of lists that I seem to have made through Quattro.

As for the E-Bay thingy, I've never used it, and see from the link that the seller only ships to the US and that you need to have a PayPal Account. I'm in Canada, and don't have nor understand PayPal. Told ya I'm a computer idiot,.......er dummy, lol.

Thanks again, I hope I cleared that up.
    Clear as mud! lol

Oh, sorry about that Oooops; I misunderstood the question there...

AbiWord is a freeware word processing program similar to Microsoft Word and a lot like Word Perfect as well. Many people actually like better than either of those two other applications because AbiWord is suitable for typing papers, letters, reports, memos, etc. and it's is designed to integrate perfectly with the operating system it runs on. (AbiWord: Supported Platforms)

Note: Regarding eBay - I buy as well as sell many items on eBay. The reason why so many sellers often state: "We only sell to the US!" is because many places in the world are extremely difficult to send items to. As well being very expne$ive (i.e customs charges, etc) the item can take forever to actually reach the buyer. However very often sellers who claim they "only sell to the US" will also ship to Canada for only a little extra. I know that I will do this, but only if the buyer has an excellent feedback history! ;)

As for PayPal, I have noticed many sellers "prefer" and "require" paypal (particularly for lower priced items) because this is the very fastest way for them to get their money and practically guarantees that the seller receives an accurate e-mail address.

    Good Luck!

Well... My understanding was that Oooops was looking for a replacement for Word Perfect.

StarOffice or OpenOffice is an OK choice; that is, if you have room on your hard drive for the whopping 92.3 MB download as well as 200 Mbytes of disk space available for after you install it (for the entire Open Office suite, I mean). AbiWord 2.4.5 is only a measly 5.15MB in comparison.

While both of these choices will work; in my view, replacing Word Perfect with OpenOffice is like deciding to replace your nightstand clock radio/CD player by purchasing a radio station and/or an entire music store chain. <lol> ;)

    Good Luck!

I love your humour, in a twisted way it actually helps me grasp some of this computer stuff! lol
    ;)

I will bookmark the AbiWord link to have a look at tomorrow.

As for making "lists" with columns (for example, like what a grocery shopping list may look like) will AbiWord do columns as well, or is there another free for use program out there similar to Quattro? I made columns within WordPerfect using the Tab key, but found when I had to add or remove information on the list, the arrangement on the list was distorted/altered as a result of using the Tab key. Know what I mean? I'm a very basic computer user, so these programs tend to be confusing for me. Thanks for your help guys!

    eg
Column 1 -space here- Column 2
blah blah blah -space here- blah blah blah
blah blah blah -space here- blah blah blah
blah blah blah -space here- blah blah blah
blah blah blah -space here- blah blah blah
blah blah blah -space here- blah blah blah
    blah blah blah -space here-

Sorry, I have no idea how well AbiWord makes lists with columns. I actually tested this program many years ago (when it was first released) and I remember that it worked surprisingly well especially for a freeware program. I actually currently use Word 2003 so I have no use for AbiWord.

The version that I tested was called AbiWord v1.0 and was first released in early 2002. I remember that version 1.0 did not include support for table-based layout. However, my understanding is that since the release of AbiWord 2.0 (around Sept. of 2003) the program has included support for Tables and you might want to check out this link: How to Create Tables.

Note: The latest stable release is AbiWord 2.4.5. I do not know if there is currently any "official" forum available (there wasn't when I first tested it). However; there is an online "Users Manual" (of sorts) which is available here at AbiWord Help. They also have a French and Polish language online AbiWord Help as well.

    Good Luck!

    One more question..........

If I remove WordPerfect/Quattro (WordPerfect Office 2000) from my computer, will the saved documents from those programs that I have on my computer stop working? Maybe I should wait until I have copied everything over to AbiWord?
    Thanks!
