    Hey Geeks. :)

I have Zone Alarm running on my puter; the icon sitting nicely in the systray telling me it's running.

There seems to be a problem, though. One, one the main Zone Alarm screen, it says that 0 intrusions have been blocked since install. Now, that might be a good thing--0 intrusions means 0 problems--but I've always liked seeing high numbers of instrusions being blocked. It makes me think the proggy is working. ;) Two, Zone Alarm isn't using any RAM. It doesn't show up as a process in my RAM monitoring proggy (RAM IdleLE) nor when I press ctrl-alt-del and look at the RAM monitor there.

My question: are these things normal?

    Thanks.

It starts blocking things the minute it's installed.

There should be zlclient.exe in the processes running part of your task manager when Zone Alarm is running.

Right click on the icon and see what pops up -- did you click on "stop internet activity" or "shutdown Zone Alarm" or something...it should say those 2 phrases. If those 2 phrases say "start internet activity", etc. then you have the program but it's been "paused" so to speak..

Probably should just uninstall and reinstall and then see what happens.

I found the zlclient.exe in the Task Manager. But for some reason it doesn't show up in the RAM IdleLE, which isn't really a big deal.

It still says 0 intrusions have been blocked since install. I find that strange in that I've been connected to the internet through a cable modem for the last couple of days. Should I be worried about that? Or might it just be a program quirk?

Right-click on the system tray icon. Click on Restore Zone Alarm Control Center. Go down the left hand side of the box and chose "alerts and logs" then click on the "Log viewer" -- tab at the top of box.

You can chose to show the logs by "firewall" or "program" but either way, move screen over to show the "action taken" column.

Does anything in that column have the words BLOCKED...or does everything say "ALLOWED"? Most programs should say "BLOCKED"

I just noticed that the same thing is happening with the Zone Alarm on my laptop at work. It says 0 intrusions blocked. Also, when I ran the Stealth Test at PC Flank, the resutls came up "non-stealthed."

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling ZA, but it failed the test again. And the ZA log doesn't have any entries in it.

I haven't touched any of the default configs that the progam has. So, what do you think the problem might be?

i don't know but i was reading this thread and decided to check my zone alarm. there is something odd going on with mine too. if i hit any of the options it turns itself off and disappears off the desk top. its still in the start-all programs tho. I'm gonna uninstall and reinstall it . also it sez that it cannot detect any anti virus software despite the fact that antiVir is flashing at the top where it sez programs. aloha laurie

What do you mean by "hit options"???

Mine doesn't recognize AVAST either -- I think you have to have Zone Alarm Pro for that to be integrated, I just have ZA free version

i meant that on overview - preferences there is an options box. on firewall -main there is an advanced option, on program control - main there is a custom option....etc. curiouser is the fact that when i just tried to uninstall it, it refused saying this. i uninstalled it from add remove programs and reinstalled it and everything seems fine now. aloha.

I didn't have a problem uninstalling it, LaurieB. But, yeah, I wonder if it might be a problem with the new version...meaning, I had the old version (it updated itself when I connected to the internet this past week, as I had been on vacation before that) on my laptop and it worked fine before this week.

Anyways, I uninstalled it off of both my computers and am now trying Agnitum Outpost free. I'm always keen on trying new programs. So far Outpost is pretty nice, though I don't like that you don't see any internet activity indication (like in ZA when the red and green bars would flash when you were accessing stuff on the internet) on the tray icon. We'll see how it goes in the next week.

Thanks for all your help folks. :)

I couldn't get the free version of Zone Alarm configured to work smoothly and loaded Sygate onto my system 9 months ago. I found I could get running easily while I learnt how to get the settings that I wanted. It shows the speeds of your connection and I find the logs easy to follow, using them helped me to block everything I didn't want going in or out. The log often shows thirty or forty incoming actions blocked in an hour or so.

    Just my experience.

i never know what im supposed to block . i allow things that ask at the same time im trying to do something, deny things if they just pop up unexpected like. im sure someone said in an earlier thread that you should block everything except what you are using. anyway GOODMORNING and aloha
