Hi I've just updated my windows 7 home premium from 32 bit to 64 bit,
or rather did a new install of the windows 64 bit as you cant just upgrade the 32 to 64,

Now my question is the windows.old file that was created can I just copy and paste my old,

    perflogs
    program files
    users
    windows

files from there back into my c: directory ?, or will I have to reinstall and redownload all my old programs and everything ?.

Sorry if this is an idiotic question but I have no idea about this.

    Thanks.

Your best bet was to back up all your programs and or settings I am afraid.

If it was a clean install, you will have to reinstall all programs. As for the Perf Logs, Users, probably not most likely. You could try. What is the risk if you do not.

No, don't copy anything! Most Program Files data are useless without the corresponding registry entries. Also, they are now separated in 32-bit and 64-bit folders.

The same is true for the Windows folders; the structure is different from a 32-bit system. Which is the reason why you cannot "upgrade" a 32-bit to a 64-bit system.

You will need to set up and reinstall everything from scratch. The only thing you can copy from your old system are your Documents folders.
