    Hi

Did a small amount in college but I was in college to learn graphic design, as computers where for me at that point not massively available unless you where a geek and loved black monotor screens with green cursor and text, however it was later in my working career I was working for Kodak on computer based photofinishing machines and ended up doing a project for networking PCs togther for pricing and QA that I started to become more involved with computers and how they work or not.

Did as a kid mess with Sinclair Spectums, Commadore64 and Amiga gaming/pcs

From Kodak days the interest grew and I became more involded with testing software and wanting to learn more, building my own PCs helped with that alot as well as getting onto the internet in the late 80s and joining forums and newsgroups (Tweakfiles which was in part the father of this forum helped alot as at the time it was around many on the net where techy types with same interests in tweaking PCs to get them to go faster adn you learn alot from others) then came testing software and operating systems as part of the limited managed betas for Microsoft, which I still do to this day.

Now use computing in a big way in my current job which is Ophthalmic Medical Research into some eye diseases, but I keep as current as I can by reading what others post here and all over the internet at some common sites and newsgroups I visit, in regards to fixes for various issues. Keep alot of notes for fixes that have worked in past for others and ones I have found due to issues I come across and I have a great memory (does need a kick now and again to remember exactly what the fix was).

Yes indeed keep doing that and you will pickup alot of info.

LOL, actually that's how I learned too, for the most part. Used to read just about every thread here if I knew what was being talked about or not. I did have a bit of a head start as I worked in the field and had a 286 back in '85, but that system was way behind what I bought in '02 plus the Internet was brand new to me. Erm, what's a PM?:-D

Have to say I learnt so much from Majorgeeks too. The classes I took weren't as valuable to me as this site

Also, the main thing is to ask questions as there will always be someone competent here to answer them or point you in the right direction with a link that you'll have to learn. It's a very big classroom with a huge number of teachers. Don't be shy eh?;):)

Just from others around internet forums, mainly here, and from my n00b days when we had to get people in to fix the computers.

Iv learnt so so much perusing this forum and, I can do things I never would have dreamt possible five years ago; as I was a complete computer novice......But im so glad im learning, but I have advantage my other half is a malware fighter and I watch her and learn and learn....You will never learn all the things that go on with a PC so pick the parts of the PC you are interested in and away you go.....Good luck on you,re quest whatever it may be!!!:cool:wave

    Hmmm...
Used 2 comps as a tool only (dirt estimating program) from 83 to 98.
Started with an 8086 and got a 486DX2 after the first one's propriatery monitor quit.
New comps in 98 to really start using as intended. Someone else set them up and then was fired, so OJT from then on.
Caught some malware at home on the wife's comp and came here to fix in 05.
Been reading here mainly since then and taking some night courses at the local CC. (Weird being as old or older than the instructor and watching younger people waste their or their parents' money by not doing the course work. One advantage to being older and wanting to take the courses.)

Most of my experience arises after fixing them. Usually after I was the one that broke them.

Well, I am NOT an expert when it comes to these infernal machines, but I have to admit that I got 99.9% of my 'knowledge' from the people here at MGs. The other small percentage I got from screwing them up and then coming here to get it fixed!! To me, this site is amazing, but what's even more amazing is the patience these people here have when helping you. They don't give up until you're up and running again (depending on the problem, of course) and to me that's one of the many reasons why this site is so successful.

I'm in the same boat as Stubby. I owned an early model TRS-80 back when Apple was being thought up. Actually typed (copied) the code for Star Trek the game into the machine and then had it reboot itself accidentally, lost it all and had to retype the whole thing. Learned B.A.S.I.C. and actually coded a few proggys just for fun. Then got an Apple II-e and started having real fun.

Been playing games since 1978 on these machines and others. Met Kodo on a gaming site and was in clan with him a while. Followed him here and been here ever since, LURKING, silently, always learning. Met AbbySue through another pal years ago, followed her here too.

The folks who populate this site are awesome. Helpful, to the max. Patient, with us rookies who are doing good to get the machine to even boot up.

    Thanks, guys. (& gals)

    :wave
