I just installed windows xp on this system, and I've come across a problem that has stumped me. In the device manager there are question marks next to the ethernet, usb, multimedia, and video controllers. I've tried to update the drivers, but it wants a disk for each of them and I don't have any disks for those. help please...these worked before when the old harddrive was in...why wont they work now...I did a zero-fill before I installed winxp (hard drive came used)

    get the drivers from www.driverguide.com

you have to sign up but its free and they have almost every driver one could need.

If you go to the websites for the manufacturers of the hardware in question, they generally have the latest drivers available for download...free of charge. Really helps to know the proper model numbers for each piece of hardware though...

You need the chipset software installation program for your motherboard. Should be available from the manufacturer's website.

We really need to know your hardware. While everyone is correct, there could be one answer if we know. For example, the NForce boards are all in one boards. A single download would fix that.

Let us know who makes your motherbaord and the hardware in question.

I did the windows update...and I went to the driver site listed, but i don't know the specifics of the hardware. I went to the compaq site looking for driver updates, and all I found was one for the usb. As for the type of hardware...I don't know...it's not my computer (sisters). I went to the device manager and try to look it up there...but it said unknown. when I went looking in the computer, the only thing I could find was this number on the ethernet thingy (it's a different set up than mine, it's all connected to the motherboard, not in ports). Innet ISCS SI-50083....I tried looking that up everywheres...but found nothing...so I think I read it wrong...LOL..

If in doubt, download Everest from the downloads section, it will tell you everything about your computer.

    okay. it's compaq presario 6330CA

under the Multimedia audio controller it says
    IRQ 05
    Memory FC480400-FC4805FF
    Memory FC480600-FC4806FF
    Port 2000-20FF
    Port 2400-243F

    under the usb controller
    IRQ 10
    Memory FC480000-FC4803FF

    video controller
    Field Value
    Device Resources
    IRQ 11
    Memory F0000000-F7FFFFFF
    Memory FC400000-FC47FFFF

    ethernet controller
    IRQ 05
    Memory FC510000-FC510FFF
    Port 1000-103F

and all of the above have question marks beside them.

If you downloaded Everest as I asked you to, then you should be able to find the motherboard, and the chipset on it. Download the drivers for the motherboard chipset and it should cure 90% of your problems. :)

I could not find the drivers for the intel 845g chipset I went to the driverguide and found nothing...and I went to the intel site for downloading drivers (linked from everest) and all I found was usb drivers, graphics drivers, and install inf files (which, it says, is not the one to download when you are looking for drivers)... anywheres else I can look? :(

okau...I downloaded driverguide toolkit (from driverguide.com) and it says that there is conflict/sharing

    I/O Port 0x00000000-0x00000CF7 PCI bus
I/O Port 0x00000000-0x00000CF7 Direct memory access controller

    IRQ 5 Ethernet Controller
    IRQ 5 Multimedia Audio Controller

    IRQ 18 Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7
    IRQ 18 Generic SoftK56

    Memory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFF PCI bus
    Memory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFF VgaSave

Then I went to do an advance driver search using the driverguide toolkit, and it came up with 12 pages of excellent matches  well, I'm not taking the chances by downloading 12 pages of drivers *LOL* And they are all audio/video...so I'm still stuck on the ethernet...usb is fixed. yeehaw. the only one I didn't care too much about LOL

You could do this the easy way! I just did a Google search for Presario, went to Compaq's site, listed the model Presario 6330CA, and found every driver that you are needing! Hope this helps! :)

okay...now I'm confused...I did that earlier. I went to the compaq site, and as I said in an earlier post, the only driver listed for this model was the usb driver. I just did it again, and the same thing. I went looking around, and I downloaded drivers for the audio and the video (with a bit of guesswork...I know I know...guesswork is bbaaaaddd)...and they work now...the only one left is the one that I need the most...the ethernet...I'm hooking this up through the usb right now for the broadband connection, but when I give this back to my sis, she'll need to hook it up through the ethernet...eeegad...

I just went to the site and checked again, and the drivers are there. But I think that I figured out your problem. Under XP Pro, there is only the USB driver, but if you will look under "XP" , you will find the drivers. These drivers should work just fine, and sorry for any confusion. :)
