It all started with a virus that infected my computer. It got so bad that my computer was unable to start up in safe or normal mode. It would get to the PBR-2....done screen and then it would get me to the F8 screen to try and start in safe mode but it would freeze or fail to load beyond that. I am virus free now but I am having issues with my hard drive. It is acting fine and behaving fine but, after running a diagnostics test (from the F12 button menu at start up) it has failed in one area consistently. That are being the DST Short status test error code 1000-0146 msg unit

Also from the diagnostics utility I receive error code 0F00-0240 MSG block 15919220 address mark not found or media error, read test fail

Also failed the verify test with error code 0F00-1A40 with same MSG block stated above.

I inserted windows re installaion dvd and ran sfc /scannow. It replaced or repaired some files and seemed to get it back into working order. Or atleast gave me the ability to load windows in normal and safe modes which were not an option during the worst of the malware/virus infection.
I inserted windows re-installation dvd and booted up. At command prompt I entered chkdsk /p and "one or more" problems were reported. So then I entered chkdsk /r and it went through its process and didnt report anything. then entered chkdsk /p again and nothing was reported

I ran diagnostics after all that and still recieve DST short status test fail.

Is this a good indication that my hard drive is in fact on the way out?

Also I should add that the windows re-installation dvd I used was actually the dvd that came with my girlfriends computer since mine was long gone. Both operate windows xp media center but mine was originally 2002 version while the dvd I used was 2005 version. Would that in any way be causing this problem with my hard drive? Also, while they are both dells, they are different models.

    thanks

Could very well be a contributing factor. The DVD not only is tied to a brand but is also tied to a particular model. Since your hardware is not the same as your girlfriends computer, you are asking it to run a diagnostic test on a different piece of hardware.
I would not trust any results from a test designed for one hardware specs then used on different hardware specs.

hmmm I know it wouldnt necessarily fix my problem by using that dvd but I was hoping I might get lucky. It (the dvd) was able to get me back to being able to operate windows post virus so I owe it that. Since I dont have the correct dvd to try to do a repair on the actual hardrive then hopefully it will be one of those things that fixes itself. we shall see.
