How do you stop messenger signing in automatically when you connect to the net?
This is a new laptop, so I don't want to do anything dodgy...... :)

    hi there,

in messengers main window, just click: Tools (on top of the window) and Options (at the bottom of the drop down list), then click on the fifth tab "General" and uncheck "auto sign-in when connected to the internet".

    cheers!

I actually don't have a 'general' tab, but I found something called 'preferences' with a 'run this program when windows starts' button - I assume this would achieve the same end if unchecked?

Its an easy trick in winxp. Simply find the file in your program files labeled messanger. Rename it MessangerOFF and it will never load again!

    Yes, completey wrong

First : windows file protection will just replace the file when you rename it
second : it wouldnt stop it from conencting on internet access

If you use MSN messenger update it at http://messenger.msn.com/ and then you should get that preferences tab, and prevent it form signing in on internet activity.
