A friend received a computer for her son and I am looking into it for her to see what all it needs. The memory is 512MB and it says that the HD is 4GB yes that is not a typo it says 4GB so I was wondering if this is too small of a Hard Drive and if it needs to be a larger one??
It will be used to connect to the internet via a wireless DSL modem, used by a 10 year old boy for school, net surfing, & gaming. It is preloaded with Windows XP SP2 unfortunately there is no name on the outside so I can't tell you the mfg of the computer and I am not even sure how to find that out.

Everest showed me a few specs which I can list more if you need more then below..
    Disc Drive 4GB 5400rpm Ultra-ATA/33
    Bios AMI (7/15/99)
    CPU 2x Intel Pentium III 555MHz (5.5x100)
    Memory 512MB
*** I do know an ethernet port has to be installed so my friend basically wants to make sure that she isn't going to be putting more money into this computer then if she would just go buy a brand new one..
Thanks for any help you can provide me with this..
    sw:)

I also have another question regarding this computer as well..

It was a corporate computer to begin with (I can tell cuz there is a corporate sticker on it) anyhow this computer did NOT come with any discs it was preloaded with XP Pro and SP2 so my question is this..

Since the computer will be used mainly by a 10 year old I am sure that there will come a time when the computer needs to be "dumped" how can a computer be "dumped" when there is no discs with it??

Thanks for any help anyone can give me with these questions..
    sw:)

Tough choices ....ethernet card, larger hard drive (installed as a slave drive) ....software to make a restore disk ....if she can do all this herself, or have a friend that can do it ...still kind of on the fence, as some systems on sale are as low as $299. with rebates.

Plus the fact that he will not be able to update XP pro unless he has access to the Product Key, kinda sound like a "Boat Anchor" to me shewolf, but hey they think I am past my prime too

Ok thanks for the answers.. and I have one more question..
I am not very familiar with Hard Drives.. So.. if we install a new Hard Drive we have to have the CD's from the computer inorder to put XP back on right???

I understand what you are saying about the Product Key..

My friend is not very computer literate so I want to make sure I have all the facts and info before I present her options to her.. I can tell you right now the computer is infected with spyware/malware I do know how to clean that up but I am just wondering with all these other factors (see below) if she would be better off just buying a new computer..
    1. No discs period
    2. too small of an HD
    3. Need ethernet card
    4. the Drive A (floppy drive) does not want to work
& 5. It won't allow me to boot into BIOS by pressing F11 which is the only way I know how (unless I am pressing the wrong key to boot into BIOS)

Would leave xp on the 4gig drive and add a 40 - 60 gig slaved hard drive ...since it is xp with sp/2 you should have no problems with updates ...just install additional software to the slaved drive ....the floppy may just be disconnected ...and they are cheap to replace ...as to the malware ....the guys in the malware section can get you cleaned up.
Read and run first - Malware section

bios key could be f2 ...esc....f10 ....usually displayed on first screen as you boot up. What is the motherboard as reported by everest ...can search for the manual and see what it says as to bios settings.

Oh now I feel like a fool.. the F2 key displays just didn't realize that was for the BIOS.. thanks..

Ok I am not experienced with Hard Drives.. I know how to deal with programs & spyware/malware but the internal components of a computer are a learning process for me.. So with that said can you give me any links and such to read up on Slave Drives..

    Thanks,
    sw

But it is very simple ...slide the side cover off the computer (typically the left side) - after you have turned it off and unplugged the power cord!!
You will see the ribbon (IDE Cable) going to the existing hard drive ...there will be a middle connector on that ribbon ...look at the top of the hard drive or the manual that comes with it to see how to set the jumper to slave, and plug in both ide ribbon and a power cord ...hopefully there is a place in the drive bay to slide in the drive and srew it into place. ...then close it all up, replug the power cord and boot it up ...go into the bios and see if it is recognized ...restart if it is and use the setup disk that comes with the drive to format and make active.

Be aware that with an old PC, there maybe a limit on how big a hard drive (capacity wise) that the BIOS will accept without special software.
You may have to do further research to see how big you can go.
Check with the manufacturer, or google. Bazza
