Well, it depends on who was doing the telling, if you game a lot then stick with XP, no doubt about that! As to better, better for what? What did you hear? It is speedier than XP on the same hardware though is it worth learning something new? It's not hard, just different.

You may want to get a taste of it first by downloading a LiveCD which runs totally from your CD/DVD drive but it is slow, this way nothing gets touched on your hard drive.

Download Ubuntu 9.04, burn the file to CD and boot with the CD in in your drive. You will then be presented with some options, I would choose demo mode unless you want to install it within XP using Wubi, you can always uninstall it. Oh, others will have their favourite Linux versions(distros) but I know and use Ubuntu so I recommend that.

My personal experience is that XP crashed due to a weak PSU that I had to replace. My Xp recovery CD would not recognize my SATA HD without my have to reset my MOBO's SATA pins. I had enough of XP and Microsoft at this point. A friend had give me a older version of Kubuntu 06 so I installed it and fell in love with Linux. I later Paid for a 2009 version of Ubuntu and have had no problems with it. All I gave up was my Gaming and that was not a problem. My system runs faster with no hesitations at all. I wish that I had made the change to Ubuntu a long time ago. If you change you will not be sorry. Hope this helps someone.

Auggiedoggie has the best advice if you want to just get your feet wet.

I think I remember you had issues with download, but Ubuntu as most Linux distributions are free. The newest version of Ubuntu releases next week 10/29 and I believe I saw there is a new Fedora 12 in the works also for soon release.

Ya I had issues w/ download install. So I got a LiveCD shipped to make a clean install. I order both Kubuntu and Ubuntu and settled w/ Ubuntu. Let me know how this new version of Ubuntu is?? I am going to wait and see all the feedback before I do a upgrade.

The last kernel update for the Desktop broke Nvidia.

As a test I installed 9.10 RC on my Dell Latitude C840 and it as well did not digest either Broadcom Wireless Drivers or Nvidia. This was odd, as it all worked in Live Desktop. I reinstalled it (took about 45 mins) and let it reboot making sure ethernet was hooked up. Boot to black screen..... I knew this was Nvidia. Back to Live CD Desktop and entered the gTerminal command sudo gedit and scroll to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change "nvidia" to "nv" save and reboot. Reboot found me on the desktop. Nvidia does not fully load but I won't use compiz on this dinosaur. Wireless works and since I use FEBE/Xmarks I have all my same bookmarks and extensions on all machines. This version of Ubuntu uses a new filesystem, so clean install is suggested.

The question remains - What exactly do you use your computer for? Streaming Hulu and WoW and games? Or browsing including some occasional video? I am the latter and find Linux a great alternative OS.

iceis, if you play games in XP, don't wipe it off the computer.
Get your feet wet in linux by trying some live CDs of different distros. If you normally surf in FF, you won't notice much difference there. It will be slower surfing from a CD rather than directly from a hd install.
If you find a distro that likes your hardware (sound, video, internet connection, printer, etc.) then you might want to partition your hard drive so you can still have XP and have linux too. When the computer boots up, it will ask which OS you want to boot. You can set it up that if no key is presses within 10 - 30 seconds, either windows will boot up or linux will boot up. I have my computer set up to boot into windows so if my husband turns it on, he can use the computer without making a selection. After 10 seconds, windows will start loading.
