    Hello:

Would this be the correct forum for questions of this nature (ISP Connection Speed(s)), please?

    Hi Glenn

It could be but only in a benchmarking capacity, if its a technical issue or a technical issue on lack of speed if your not getting what you are paying for then the Networking forum is best.

This would be the righ forum if you just wanted to post your Download/Upload speed to compaire to others as in

    Hi David - thank you!

I have forgotten now, what my specific question is/was, so I simply went-ahead and attempted to do as you have done here (the best I know how anyway - and thanks to you at that!).

Speedtest gives you a 3.8/5 score, but your speed appears PHENOMENAL to me (and I'm sure to some others)...the speed we now get here is the lowest rung on our ISP's list of packages ("DSL up to 768K") - as you can see, on this test I exceeded that rate, though two tests just prior to this one were well below the advertised rate (1 test @ 550k and another @ 660K) -- and our speed was just raised (as was our rate) from 256K, due to new FCC (Federal Communications Commission) "broadband" definition guidelines.

Speedtest rated us here @ 2.6/5 ... rather anemic compared to yours :(

If you would like a proper comparison and to find out the best possible speed you can achieve you need to find out the length and quality of your phoneline, these are the two biggest factors that affect your speed. To find this out phone your phoneline provider and ask for a broadband speed estimation test which they will perform for free,ISP's also do these test's so phone them too.

A quick example if I lived next door to the exchange I could get the maximum of 24mbps but my line length is about 4km IIRCC so I only get 6mbps download,as you can see that's about 6mbps per km loss but this isn't a rule just a rough guide/Example.

To get the best speed you need to get ADSL 'adaptive rate digital subscriber' instead of DSL,where ADSL differs is it maximises the rate of your broadband so you always get the maximum your line will support.

The next thing you need to do is shop around for the best ADSL deal.Your obviously not happy with your speed so COMPLAIN to your ISP,I can't over state how important this is they have an incredible amount of leeway when it comes your the size of your bill and the speed they can give you if your line can support it,all you have to do as mention you want to leave them because the speed is too low or the bill is too high, they will have an imaginary convo with their supervisor and as if by magic your wishes are granted, even better if you have some stats and prices of other ISP on hand to quote to them and they can match them,if you don't just LIE,I'm serious just say you've been quoted the same speed broadband for half the price they will do just about anything to keep your monthly fee deposit.

Just a few basics to hopefully improve your deal, thought I'd answer while your online and David is probably busy at work ATM:)

EDIT quick note on contractual obligations, you may have signed a one year contract so believe your stuck with them but in many cases your not, your currently not happy with the product your have been sold so are protected by law,if it was TV you'd return it and that's the way to think about it,if you not happy with the service complain and tell them you want to leave because of the poor service.

    Hi Glenn

If you are on a upto 780kb/s package then your reported speed is within that margin, but can you not get any different speeds from your ISP?

Mine is ok, not great in UK terms as I'm on the far reach of the exchange so have this as my max so far, one of my work ones is 64mb/s DL and UL.

I don't think this is a very good score...any experts out there? We've got Frontier and I can't even get videos to play without constantly stopping...and I'm pissed...:cry

I run the service programs all the time that are recommended here like CCleaner, Advanced System Care 6, IObit Malware Fighter, and use AVG Internet Security...

The problem has gotten worse of late and we're ready to switch ISPs but to which one? All I want is a good, fast connection speed as I'm on-line a lot.

    Thanks you,
    Ken

have you called and reported it to your isp? If your not getting close to the speeds your paying for its their responsibility to fix it.

Seriously doubt it will make you feel any better, but we're not at all happy either...

I only tried once this time, but I think if you try several times you'll may get several variances...

Here's my ISP/plan...I'm on the least expensive of three plans, as this is all we can currently afford..

    Best to you
