If I own a game is it legal for me to burn a copy? I am asking because I have twin 6 year olds that each have their own p.c. and always want to play the same game...I have burnt doubles and some work, others will install but then when you activate them to play they read "need to insert disc"...Before I get myself in trouble asking if there is a fix for that, can someone tell me if it is alright to do this? I do own the game and think I have heard you are allowed to copy for backup....Is this correct??.....And if so is there something I can do with the non-functioning copies to make them work? Keep in mind these are windows 98 based games, nothing really intricate.

You can make a backup. Using the backup in another computer to play the game? No, that is not legal unless the game states you can copy it. Not likely if it requires the CD.

Generally, it is one CD, one program, one PC.

If I remember right, the Fair Use Act (or whatever it's called) gives you permission to make a back-up of your music and movies, for your own personal use. For example, if you go on a road trip, you are allowed to put your favourite music and movies on your laptop, rather than take 20+ discs with you. I don't know what it says about games though.
