Questions about Router and networked computer

I have a couple of questions, but first let me describe my network set-up to enable you to answer them.
I have two computers networked to a Linksys Router.
The three year old computer on the first floor is set as the "main" computer in the network and this seven year old computer is set as the networked one and is on the second floor.
The router is on the first floor. There is one cable going from the router into the cable modem and another cable going from the router to the computer. The networked computer on the second floor has one of those small "satellite" things (I'm not sure of the proper term) connected to it to enable to router to work for it.
My husband and I bought the modem three years ago to enable the computer upstairs to connect to the internet.
    My questions are:
    1. The "main" computer is unworkable. It cannot start and the "start-up repair" cannot fix it. If I disconnected it from the router to be repaired or disposed of, would I still be able to get on to the internet on my networked computer upstairs?
    2. I'm supposed to be able to print something using the upstairs networked computer on our printer downstairs (which is hooked up to the downstairs computer) via a password, but I have never been able to get it to work. Is there a way to fix that using the upstairs networked computer?

The person who helped us set this up has vanished since my husband passed away nine months ago and I have nobody else to ask.

Thank you for your help. :)

    1) The "satellite thing is called a wireless adapter and it will continue to work even if the other computer downstairs does not.
    2) The printer will need to be connected to a computer for you to use. You will need to take it upstairs or the other computer downstairs to print your paper.

Not true. I have a printer connected to my router and can print to it from several working computers (upstairs and downstairs).

Mine is similar to this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833130025

Does your printer use a parallel port or a USB port? Print servers come in either flavor.

Thank you for your reply, however, my first question was not answered. :)
My question was: if the main computer was disconnected from the router, would the networked computer upstairs still be able to connect to the internet?

I'm not sure. I would have to check.

As I said earlier, yes, it will continue to work.

Yes the internet would still work for the upstairs computer. The "main" computer is already off line and you have internet so physically disconnecting it would not make a difference.

That depends on the printer. It was evidently connected to the computer that currently does not boot so that network option is no longer available.

If the printer is network capable, you could connect it to the router and map it from there.

If the computer is USB, you could take it upstairs and connect it to the computer and install the drivers. (the drivers may already be installed on the computer because it was a mapped network printer.)

If the printer is parallel only, it will depend on your computer upstairs having a parallel port or not. Many of the newer computers do not have a parallel port anymore.
