First of all, I love you guys. This site is amazing. Kudos!

Now to my questions. I go to free porn streaming sites like Redtube and Spankwire and was wondering if this is ok for my computer's security. Also I go to megaupload to download Sopranos episodes (amazing TV series, check it out if you haven't) and sometimes ads will pop up.

Just wondering if there was any danger is getting a virus by doing these things. Should I follow a clean up procedure or am I ok? I don't download porn, just stream it. Also I am on Vista.

One more question, and that's it. On my Mac, I am pretty much safe from everything, right?

Thanks in advance and please move this thread to the proper forum if this is the incorrect one. But this is the most appropriate place I could find to post this.

    Cheers!

Surf safely and carefully, use Opera or FireFox with NoScript plus WOT or LinkExtend or the equivalent that runs ok on the Mac. Use OpenDNS to protect you from some of the worst sites.

Basically, Java, Flash and other plugins are just as vulnerable and targetted on Macs as they are on Windoze - update them or don't allow them to be used.

Use a good hosts file that will block you from getting hit by known malware sites. Setup and maintain a good software firewall - Macs are not immune.

Good luck (says he, sneaking off to checkout spankwire ... >)

I am a noob at all those terms you used. If you could give me detailed instructions for doing all this (links to download, etc.), that would be great. Thanks for the reply!! :)

Just curious regarding this subject. Can you get a virus just from watching streaming videos? Not just from porn sites, but sites like youtube and hulu. I frequently have people send me links to videos and I'd like to know if there is a vulnerability.

    Hi

The danger is high to malware as some porn streaming sites can be infected themselves and clicking to run a streaming video could infect you if its infected, the worst is downloading video of the likes of megaupload as you have no idea whats inside the dowwnload package, many malwares are spread though users wanting video/tv/music/games/software for free, all that glitters is not always gold.

You takes your choice and if you wish to download copyrighted materials then you leave yourself open to potential malware infections.

I see. One more question: how would I know that I have contracted a malware by streaming/downloading stuff?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi

In the majority of cases you may not, as this software is to try and hide itself, but using a guide like this of ours here and making sure you safe surf to recognised safe sites will keep you as safe as you can be.

Outward signs of malware are searches not going to the sites you want, homepage not what you set, poups stating you have malware and we will clean it for $xxxx etc

Sadly porn streaming sites can be doubious so you take your chance, I cannot advise on a safe on as I dont need porn.

I have an AVG scanner thing that scans each site on google to make sure it's safe before entering. It says Redtube and Spankwire are safe. Is it ok to go to them, do you think? I have CCleaner, Malware Bytes, and AVG Anti-Virus all active, as well as Windows Firewall, and Defender. Is this protection good enough?

    Hi

You takes your chance, its like users saying they dont use IE but Firefox because its safer then they still get malware, its not always the site its what it hosts, and if the uploads are done by users then the site owners dont know what these files hold.

You can have all the protection in the world but downloading/running an infected file will infect you as you have authorised it onto your PC, but to your question is it ok to go to them, thats your choice as porn has no interest to me so not going to check the sites out for safety.

Ok, a follow-up question then. Any advice on quitting porn? Because the only time in the past I had malware was due to porn lol.

Also, what is the best security available for a Mac? Is there something similar to CCleaner for it?
