I used to use windows XP, I liked it becuase I knew how to use it

    1. I want to find all video files, I used to be able to do this with the SEARCH function on my XP start button-->find--> click the only videos---> results
now how do I do that on W7?

2 I will have more later

Put the link to your Videos in the Start Menu.

Right click the Start button -> click Properties -> in Start menu tab click Customize.
Scroll down to Videos and click the Display as a link -> OK -> Apply -> OK.

Job done. When you want the video library just click Start -> Videos.

    Hi

You can also use the much better search functions built into Windows 7. Click the Start orb, and a text box is at the bottom. Type the name of the file you're trying to find (or file extention, i.e. avi, mpg, mp4, etc. for the videos you have) and it will bring up a list of search results. This search box is also available in Windows Explorer (i.e. Computer), but when used there only searches within the currently selected drive/folder. For instance, if you open Windows Explorer and browse to C:\, it will only find video files in the C:\ drive.

    the issue is
i dont know the name of the files I want
or their type of file,I just want to search and find all video or music files, easily, like I could in windows XP

    Hi

What you can do and its very quick and will search all HDDs attached to your PC is to use a "search operator" and the one for you is kind:videos

so in any folder and preferably open Computer and in the top right hand search box (names Search Compute) just type or paste kind:videos and wait for the files to list, from there you can right click any of the files and choose Open File Location.

Can do the same for music in kind:music or pictures by adding the word pictures after the kind: can also add any doc or file format to after the kind: operator.

wow that is what I wanted and such a waste of time compared to the XP platform
now I'm having issues with my toolbar
I dont have my "Show desktop" icon

  9. mcsmc

    mcsmc MajorGeek

    Yes, you do.

The "show desktop" button is the little part of the sidebar to the RIGHT of the clock/date.

EDIT: I'm not sure why you're bashing Windows 7. Yes, it's a big change in how things work from Windows XP, but it's a much better operating system. Change isn't always easy to adapt to... I understand. But there's no reason to be negative about things simply being different.

Also, I don't see how using search operators is harder. Almost everything in Windows 7 takes LESS steps to do than in Windows XP.

    New Tab

I can't get the new tab feature to work on windows7

I am currently on MG's board and if I go to my IE Favorites to open a new favorite, I can't use Right Click: new tab/window, I have to either open new window and go to a new tab, then back to favorites or I will open my favorites and it will use the same window I have MGs in.
how Do I get the new tab feature?

  11. mcsmc

    mcsmc MajorGeek

Are you using IE 8? I personally use Firefox, it handles all of my tab needs flawlessly.

    Yeah crap
I used to have FF on my old XP and I just started using this one..there is so much crap on this new computer that is just useless to have,. well for me for sure.
is there a link on MG that will tell me
1 how to clean it all up and just have the basic crap I use
2 re-install MS xp, so I dont have to fiddle with all this stuff

technology is great, but I dont need to sync my IPOd, Ipad, i phone, i nano, blueberry, MAC, tivo, nintendo WII. xbox48000, Kindle(so I can read 5 verisions of thebible while in church) all at the same time.

oh yeah, I'm unable to learn in school, it must be the teachers fault. and I still have no idea how to use orbit downloader...
I might be prolix but at least I'm insane....

Search is much more improved than the one in XP, yes granded its different.

The full list of Search Operators is HERE

As for Tabs in IE8 can you post a screenshot of this location, open IE and click Tools > Internet Options, then in General Tab click Settings next to Tabs and attach a screenshot of that page?

Is your Win7 upto date with all updates?
What security software do you have installed?
Have you tried Safe Mode with Networking to see if a security app maybe blocking you?

Go to Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. All installed programs are listed there. Uninstall/remove any you don't want or use.

    Hi

Is your PC a new one and if so is it an OEM one from say Dell, HP etc? if so what make and model?

Best to write down the apps names from the uninstall list in Control Panel, and then look through all the apps listed and see if its something you may use, but in the main leaving them will cause no harm.

Just may need to double check whats starting up with your PC as that is an area on any Windows versions that could cause a slowdown (especially with OEM build PCs) but you can attach a startup list and we can help you decide whats needed or not.

Use CCleaner and click Tools > Startup and in the bottom right corner, click Save to text file, then save the log and attach as per HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post

But dont manage them with CCleaner, use this standalone app (it doesnt install in Window 7 but can manage startups well) StartupCPL Standalone

*can also attach from CCleaner Tools > Uninstall menu a list like the startup one as it too has the option to save to text file the list of installed apps.

If you are new to Windows 7, then give it a chance as many I have spoken too and including my mother, say they like Windows 7 once used to it as its much quicker and more stable than XP.

Snipping Tool is great for taking and saving screenshots, but a you earlier stated "I dont know what most of these things are and thefore dont want to remove something I might be inadverntly using" then this statement is contradictory as why dismiss something you "may" need at some point, Word 2003 is a great tool for documents, yes OpenOffice can do this as can Notepad and Wordpad, but if its not running its not causing you any issues.

    Thanks Halo

"If you are new to Windows 7, then give it a chance as many I have spoken too and including my mother, say they like Windows 7 once used to it as its much quicker and more stable than XP."

Yeah, I 'missed' W'98 when I went to XP, and had a similar experience when I hijacked my wifes machine w/W7, and now I am enjoying some of the newer features. Slowly...very slowly.

I thank you well versed folks for sharing so many helpful tips & tools, as well as the many volunteers that give a huge amount of their time and effort those of us less "intellectual gifted"!:-D

    AsusUL30A series

    MS windows7 home premium 64-bit
Intel CPU U7300@1.3GHz, 4GB ram, mobile intel 4 series express chipset family

Yes, I am new to Windows7 and my statement wasnt so much contradictory as smart, yet old. I was happy with my old XP and what it did and I was satisfied with it. Much in the same way my mom is happy with her 2001 cell phone with crappy text interface. no GPS, and no face-face video, etc.
I like the easy to use features of XP, like going to one screen to search out any video files, not having to open a folder and then go to the right and type in a box some words.
    XP start-->search-->click "videos"-->enter
    done, took 3 seconds
I can't even click a link to show desktop on windows 7, that's just a basic feature
faster? I didnt realize XP was slow?
I dont see any reason to have windows 7, same as I dont see a reason to walk around with my phone in my face tweeting every mundane thing that goes on in my life or video taping sunsets to enjoy "later"
My college upgraded From XP to windows vista, and I have no idea why? do kids really need to use facebook or upload videos, sync their ipads/iphones while using a school computer and thus taking up space from someone who could use the school computer for school work
that's off topic....but I'm just looking for a reason to use W7, when I never found XP to be slow or unstable and I really need a snipping tool instead of hitting a few buttons to take a screenshot?
    hmmm
    thanks though for the response...

    thanks
I'm not trying to be closed minded, I've yet to see any good points about it
what new features are you enjoying?

Since it's been mentioned, I do notice better stability in7. and the favs that go along the top of my browser. The tabs are convenient and quicker. I still miss the "classic view" of older versions, but these are enough of a good start for me to be more 'openminded'.
    Myself, I am slow to learn newer things, and more so since hitting middle age. Though my patience for others, as well as myself is getting better, and I'll take that! {I've opened a few too many doors with my head, literally. and turned off a few street lights atop telephone poles in the same fashion}

I cannot explain features anything like many of these folks, I do encourage to consider making the most of what you have. You sound like a very smart person, I appreciate your plain talk!:)

making the most of what I have?
I dont know what that means, why not just tell me
    what is is what is
its all part of the plan
    squeaky wheel gets the grease
life everyday like it's your last
    or any other useless axiom
    grass is always greener...etc

I am not into vaugue "ideas", when I ask someone, "I'm at the grocery store, want anything?"
I can't help them if they say, "chocolatey, but not chocolate, fat-free, yet tasty"

I'm not sure I understand the stability issue being better in windows7, that is vague for me.

I am all for new technology, if it has a purpose
I use a cell phone rather than a landline.
However, I am failing to see what/how W7 is better than XP I do miss the start button-->all programs that would apear in columns instead of small icons I have to scroll down and read
sheesh, I'll give it till I go back home......how frustrating this is.

Please pardon my ignorance and ineffectual communication... I've been coming to a realization in recent years, ...That I'm friggin braindamged!:confused

You sound young and somewhat impetuous, {absolutely no disrespect intended}, I simply chimed in and had nothing of any real value to offer, I apologise. I can relate to your impatience (whether real or imagined by me), I was once more like that, please waste no more of your time with me, as the lights may be on...but surely there is no one home!
    Fare thee well!
