quick laptop question

i've had this laptop since 05 i think, and now it makes a loud sound everytime i use it, like i can hear the fans really loud ( i think its the fan, the laptop is just loud ) my laptop has been really slow for a while now, boots up slow. does this just mean my laptop is about to die on me or is it a fixable problem?

 

Slow boot sounds like it could be the HD, not the fan. Usually a noisy fan should cause problems after some heat has been generated.

 

ic, well it does heat up reallly fast, even if its been sitting there resting for days, when i turn it on its loud as hell and heats up quick.

 

What I did on my noisy desktop was to momentarily stick a wooden toothpick into the exhaust fan, which stopped the fan and the noise. Then I cleaned the built up dirt from the fan and all is normal.

 

sounds like a good idea. stick a toothpick in the fan to stop it turning, so during start up you can be sure it's not the fan, but the harddrive that's making the noise.
