Quick .NET questions.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

I've noticed (many times) multiple versions of Microsoft .NET Frameworks listed in the Add/Remove Programs lists. Are these necessary? In other words, if there is a .NET 3.5 listed, are 3.0 and 2.5 needed?

Reason I ask, I'm working on an XP machine, and the only problems I have yet to solve are failed .NET updates for the lower versions - if the older versions are unnecessary, then I can do away with them.

    Thanks.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of - looks like I got some more digging to do. No biggie: I'll just turn off Auto Update for now, let the client use his machine for a while.

Thanks for the link - good stuff. :major

Certain programs use different versions of .NET. I was all set to stop at .NET 1.x and all the SP and security updates but then something I installed complained that I didn't have .NET2 <sigh>. My options were a) install it or b) do without the program. I chose to install so now I go through all the security updates for that.
As far as .NET3, I don't have it installed and I've hidden it from showing as an update. ;) The less I install, the fewer security risks. I'll see how long I can go before some program I want to install demands I have it. Then I'll go through the decision again, "how bad do I want this program?".

Exactly. What gets me is a good number of my customers don't use their machines for anything other than checking email and playing Solitaire, yet they call me in a heartbeat to "make it stop trying to update .NET". Some of these machines are still on dial-up, so the updates pretty much mess up their day. Guess that's the price we have to pay for progress. :confused

Thanks Caliban for asking the question that many of us have considered asking. :cool

It is a pity that one, all encompassing, version cannot be offered.

For dialup users, I'd turn auto update off. Also go through and select those you think are not neccessary and choose "do not show me this update".
I had a couple of seniors on dialup. For the little browsing (safe sites) and email, I didn't feel they needed to keep windows up to date monthly. I'd bring their computer here every few months, connect it to my broadband and grab all the updates.
