If you have an infected system, wouldn't it be advantagous to remove the hard drive and mount it into a working system as a secondary drive and clean it from there? (I have a USB/SATA toaster.)

Wouldn't this ensure that the scanner was running in a "trusted" environment? Couldn't the MBR be scanned more reliably?

Are there any tools for removing malware designed to work on infected drives that are mounted on clean systems?

I have moved your post into software considering you are just asking questions and are not in need of malware removal. :)

Of the people who get heavily infected with malware, a good majority of them do not have the knowledge to be pulling a drive, and/or are using OEM machines, in which that can void the warranty with some companies.

I personally think a once compromised drive can never be trusted ever again, clear of malware or not. But thats not something that people will want to hear, so I will leave it at that.
