quick question about upgrading ram

I just ordered a 1gb ddr ram for an old desktop, would it be necessary to upgrade the processor as well?

Its pentium III 798mHz

 

P111 use SDRAM, PC133 or such. You'll have to upgrade both your processor and motherboard to use that RAM, different pin counts to start with. If you go to crucial.com and run their analyzer, it will tell you what you can use with your motherboard.

It should be but run the analyzer to make sure of what's recommended, you may be getting too much if you get PC133.

 

Sorry, I edited my above post before I saw your post, go to crucial.com and you'll see what you need. Also, like my board only takes upto 512MB and it will tell you that also.

ok I went to crucial.com and ran the scanner

For the desktop in question, it said I had 3 slots total, (2)128mb taking up 2 slots and a free slot for a combine total of 256mb RAM.

Crucial told me that the maximum RAM for that system is 768mb, so I ordered (2)256mb RAM chips to use in combination with one of the 128mb. I made sure to get the right type (SDRAM PC133).

Ive tried different combinations of the chips and the only time i was able to get anything going involved the original 128mb chips, nothing else. Any other i would get either an error message saying "pci.sys is missing or corrupt" or nothing showing up at all when i powered on. But the wierd thing is BIOS would sometimes recognize one or both of the 256mb chips, but windows would just not load.

any suggestions???
