I took this screenie directly after I started my computer and logged on at MG. Does this look normal? Should I only have about 1/2 of my memory available? Often I have noticed that my CPU will run at 80-85% after being online for awhile. Is this normal? I do not have any spy/malware. My puter runs as quickly as it ever did. Just wondering because I do not know about this stuff. Thank you, Tate

Mr B, I don't use FreeRam but the only thing I can think of, at present, is how many processes are running at a time. Does FreeRam run automatically after say 5 minutes to free up ram. I presume you are using XP home or Pro. I run W98SE and use

    Analog X MaxMem http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=307

This has 3 levels of forcing Ram to be freed. It runs every 5 minutes. I usually load it up after bootup, run it twice to gain maximum free memory and then close it down. If you leave it running it sometimes interferes with other programs, when the 5 minute re-run comes around. Bazza

Nope, using WinME. I just wanted to know if that kind of load was normal right after boot. I don't have that much stuff running really.

As i mentioned, if it causes troubles, run it, then close it. Bazza

Mr "B", how many processes are running at a time?

Ctrl-Alt-Del will give a rough idea on how many are running.

Start-->Run--->type in "msconfig" without quotes, (click on Startup tab), will provide another view of running processes.

Starter from CodeStuff http://codestuff.netfirms.com/news.shtml is free and will give you a much greater control over the running processes. You can load, unload ,or delete, any process easily. I use it all the time on W98SE. Bazza

Hey Bocce. Don't all "free ram" type apps drop all working processes into ram thus saving space on disk, thus making puter faster? That's the theory, right? If that's the case then, I'd say yeah, it's supposed to be that way. AND have you hit that "Free Ram Now" button yet?

Crappers Bill, I don't know!!! Yes, I hit the "Free RAM" often and it will clear RAM in a heartbeat, up to 400+. My computer is running well, I just wanted to know if that that was normal. Evidently it is. I basically put this program on the 'puter to kind of monitor what was going on, not because I was having any particular problem. I find it handy. Thanks for the reply!! Tate

Okay, then it is working right :) Like I said, the idea is that the ram manager will load all active processes into ram which makes the processes respond faster because they're right at hand in the ram, so you don't have to wait for them to be loaded from disk to ram. Meantime, if you need a buncha ram right away to run . . . oh, something that's ram hungry like paint shop pro say, then you can obtain the needed ram by hitting the "Free Ram" button. Phew! glad I didn't have to actually say that info blurt. I'd be gasping for breath right about now. As it is my fingers are breathing quite hard at this moment. :D

And BTW, how come you're not using Cacheman (not CachemanXP, but the older vesion that works with Win9X) Bocce? That's the bestest ram application PLUS many other things, yet.

Duh...well...I dunno! I'll just have to have a look at it!! I do not know a lot about these things, I'm still learning. What's the PLUS?

Lol. Disregard the *PLUS* Bocce. I was just trying to stress that cacheman does a lot more than just manage ram. Cacheman also had some very nice tweaks and other enhancers. Here's the listing on MG for it. Cacheman 5.50.30
