quick time alternative

I notice in the download section there is a program called quick time alternative that allows you to play quicktime files without having the quick time software installed. Also there is an alternative for real player. What is the advantage to using these alternative programs?

None of the associated problems in having either of those two full applications installed, I have and still use both rather than install QT who's popup to buy the full version irritated the hell out of me and RealPlayer which has doubious privacy concerns.

The Alternatives just install the codec's needed to play the above media and use the old WMP classic as the viewer adn do the job very well IMHO

I see it supports the following browsers...

The QuickTime Browser plugin supports Internet Explorer, Opera, Mozilla and Netscape.

Will it work with firefox as well?

sadly not got a clue as I dont use Firefox.... but reading up about it NO it doesnt support FF

Don't know about the Browser plug in part, but IrfanView plays both as well as many others and is well worth having anyway.

(Strange that the Quick Time plug in supports Mozilla and Netscape and not FireFox???)
