Quicktime/Realplayer alternatives?

    I was wondering if it really is better to use realplayer and quicktime alternatives. Has anyone used them and are they just as good and versatile (can you use them with as many apps as the main programs).

    In the end is it worth it to switch from real and quicktime to there alternatives.
