I'm running Windows XP SP2 and I am using the zune software for my profile. Because of this I have a large library of mp4 video files. My younger sister decides she wants an iPod, which is fine. so I installed iTunes and Quicktime for her so she could use it. Now whenever I try to add newly converted videos to the file I my Zune program looks to find them, My computer lags terribly and I can't do anything. I've looked in the task manager and a Quicktime program is taking up over half of my processes. So I uninstalled Quicktime and everything was fine, but now my sister can't run iTunes on her account. Is there anyway I can install iTunes and Quicktime onto just her account so the Quicktime program won't be on mine and screw everything over. Or is there a way to just block Quicktime from my account.

I don't know the program StartUpLite but since it's made by Malwarebytes' it's safe to mention it. It is said to be capable of hindering QuickTime in starting up until you click it's quick launch icon. So video when you need it. And no video when you don't need it.

One really wonders what Apple and QuickTime needs all these angry people for? You are definitely not the first. Why do they steal resources from their users computers like this? The program does not offer you any way of shutting it completely down. But StartUpLite is said to be able to.

I read somewhere that there is a similar option in Windows Defender somewhere on it's GUI pages - the Tools menu, Start functions. Never checked myself.

Here is a better path: Windows Defender -> Tools -> Software Explorer -> choose Category -> Startup programs -> scroll the list to find QuickTime -> select Deny.

CCleaner has a similar function but QuickTime is apparently able to bypass that.

I'll try the StartUpLite first, if it doesn't work I'll have to go download Windows Defender.

This is how to remove the Tray icon: In the QuickTime GUI: Edit -> Preferences -> QuickTime Preferences -> Advanced tab -> remove the check mark for Tray icon.

I also found a tweak but it will only open in cached. Hope the link works. Gave it a spin around TinyURL to enhance the possibility.

The name of the program that keeps locking up the computer is WLXQuickTimeControlHost.exe

This file could also come from Windows Live Photo Gallery if you have this program installed? It's known for causing this problem.

This here is a Microsoft article about some of the Windows Live Photo Gallery problems - some tweaks there as well.

    Something you could try:

You could simply locate the offending file(s) in the Task Manager under processes, navigate to them via Explorer, modify the security settings (right click on the file, choose Properties, go to the Security tab) to deny access to your account, but keep allow on your sister's account. I'm not sure if you can do this in XP Home, but I know you can in XP Pro. "Simple File Sharing" (I believe is the name, it's at the bottom of the options) has to be UNCHECKED in your folder view options (Explorer Tools menu -> Folder Options, View tab), in order to modify individual security settings.

hey I found a really easy fix to it, we don't need quicktime for anything other than itunes, so I just changed the file from .exe to .del and everything works fine now, except of course that program, but that was the desired effect anyway. itunes still works so everyones happy. Thanks for your help though.
