Hello everyone. I'm having a problem with Quicktime on my old internet computer. Its a PIII running windows 98. Its been clicking along just fine with a DSL connection. Anyway... recently, when trying to view various quicktime related clips, I get an error. Sometimes if its a video clip, I can hear the audio, other times I just get a big letter "Q" with a broken film clip image.

When I do get an error it says,

quicktime is missing software required to perform this operation. Unfortunately, it is not available on the quicktime server.

I've reloaded quicktime regardless and no difference. It doesn't tell me much. I'm assuming its some kind of codec, but I don't know what the likely candidates would be OR how and where I could go about finding them.

This is one site as an example. When I try to view the demo, the above error will show.

I would really appreciate any ideas, this is getting annoying :) and I fear the hammer on the table across the room is too near. :)

Sorry can't help. Don't use quicktime but I luv that message you get.

Quote/ quicktime is missing software required to perform this operation. Unfortunately, it is not available on the quicktime server.

What hope have we got if even the developers don't tell us what we need.

LOL, yeah its crazy. They know what codec to look for in order to tell you it isn't there :) but they won't tell you.

Forgive my ignorance, but with a W98 system, is there a download I could get that would install itself as the default player for quicktime. I imagine the things quicktime plays, and the files I'm having trouble with vary.

I just did quick filefind on my system for .MOV files and I found a few. Quicktime played them ok, both video and audio. Must have to do with streaming video. <sigh> The error is all over the internet when I search, but I can't seem to find any answers. If I do, I'll post it in case someone else has a problem.
