My system is XP Pro, SP2 and in going thru my add/remove programs I see Quicktime. In doing a search on this, I understand it is an Apple program. Is this something I need or can I delete it?

Quicktime is not a necessary. It just plays files just like windows media player or any other media player. If you dont use it, need it or want it - go ahead and uninstall it.

It is a music and video playing program and it is sometimes used for plugins with browsers. It is safe to delete but some browsers need a Quicktime plugin so if you find a website that requires a Quicktime plugin you'll need to reinstall it.

If you do not have any issues with it, you should probably keep it.
It is rare that I need it, but it does happen (.mov files)

There used to be a good alternative program, but Major geeks has removed it due to a version possibly stretching the law; I am not aware of another viable alternative.
