I have spent all day with 3 different online techs from HP help trying to get HP Total Care Advisor to recognize PC TOOLS SPYWARE WITH ANTIVIRUS. So I thought I would try Majorgeeks forum. They sent me everywhere and I even restored from 2 days ago and now there is a problem with Avast and the error 536870929 and aswClear.exe won't remove it either. HELP!!!

Hp Total Care Advisor, sounds like a real PITA. Sorry, but it sounds like something I would remove first thing out of the box. I usually don't put much stock in all in one tools as a rule, but my experience with Vista is next to nill, :confused have you read this thread?

    and this one...

Time is money so I'm told, a day and three techs, you have more patience than I do...
Hope you work it out one way or the other :wine

    Hi

Did you unistall AVAST before installing PC Tools Spyware with Antivirus? if not then that could be part of your issue, many applciations (I'm not a great fan of HP Total Care, but then thats me, you may like it and wish to keep for now) can cause applications like this to become corrupt, so if HP has an update for Total care then install it.

To clear up the AVAST issue, try the AVAST uninstall utility, willl need to run this from Safe Mode (F8 at boot)

*worst case is that you may never get PC Tools to be recognised in HPs 3rd party tool, some applications just dont work well together.

If you try whats been posted already, then I do have something else to try, but dont wish to bombard you with info too quickly.

Why would you want pc tools antivirus ,when you have the one of the best freeware antivirus software like avast?
In safe mode uninstall everything(meant PC tools and avast),and install avast and spyware doctor again.

Try Halo's method it's the most accurate. HP software stinks period. Every single piece of software I've seen them produce to date is absolute garbage. Including their software packages to install HP printers. In short, I'm guessing as well, that it didn't remove settings from your old antivirus program and didn't set up their software to detect your new antivirus program. To get literal, I'm quite sure there is a registry key that tells this particular HP program what antivirus is currently installed. Now what I'm not sure about is what the method they are using to detect the antivirus to register it with their program. So yeah try Halo's method first. If that doesn't work post back and I'll try to hunt down the software and see if I can either a.) make you a registry patch or b.) if you're regedit savvy tell you how you can resolve the issue directly.

I was online with HP Chat room(big mistake) who had me delete HP TCA and go to Parasyche to dowload total care again only to find same problem. What is even worse the version of total care was for a laptop not a desktop. Went back online and next tech told me to do a restore and that was where Avast error came to haunt me because I had previously uninstalled Avast. Long story short I finally talked to HP (phone) and was told HP TCA is an integrated OEM item and can't be installed unless I do a total recovery(no way).
Also found out HP and Symantec are in bed with each other and there in lies the problem. It won't recognize other AV programs.
As far as PC Tools Spyware Doctor with AV goes I may have spent $25.00 for the whole program but I am sure we all have blown money on things we wished we didn't have. Symantec just bought out PC Tools so who knows what will happen next.
There probably is a registry fix but unless I am given a detailed fix I won't touch the registry as my system works just fine.
So life will go on and next year I will look for another program if this is not up to par.
    Thanks for you input

I have a HP desktop and am very happy with the beast but first thing i did was get rid of the free 6 month Norton AV that came with the package and all the HP rubbish that comes when you load the OEM Vista, there are GBs of the stuff.
I then created backup disks of my system before i went on line so that if i have to re-format i do not have to remove it all over again.
It's OK for me to say this as it does not help you at this moment in time but for future reference, when you get the PC right that is the time to back it up and save yourself this grief again.

As I stated earlier I have PC Tools Spyware Doctor with AV. Which is now owned by Symantec.
It probably isn't the Cadillac of Spyware/AV programs but it doesn't hog alot of space like Norton and some of the others. The program was recommended by another forum tech and I thought what the hell why not try it. Not like I am giving up millions to Madoff.

Re: Quitting is not an option..Told you so..

I maybe slow, I maybe Irish but FINALLY got rid of the error. I told you I don't quit and neither did you. After reading these replies from ninexunix and Halo I realized that I hadn't gone to safe mode to remove Avast. I did it live and that was a mistake.
Just completed this task and bingo it's gone.
Thank you, thank you and thank you all again.
I will never go to HP online chat again for help not even dirctions to the nearest bathroom.
So for now, my great friends at Major Geek, I am out of here. Keep up the great work. I wil try to remember the old saying...
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
