Okay, I was having a problem with my ethernet controller and I tried to repair windows from the XP CD I have. The CD was scratched and the repair didn't work.. Then when I went to boot from the old OS my video card suddenly quit working.

It says, "This device cannot start (Code 10)". Obviously I still get a display, and my ethernet is back up, but now it won't load my video card. I'm using windows xp w/sp2, and the card is a tyan tachaeon 9800pro. The overclocking/monitoring software for the card still works fine. I tried installing new drivers but that did nothing. Both outputs on the card work, but the resolution is ridiculously low.

WTH is wrong with this thing? I made sure the external power is plugged in and everything.. What should I try next?

sounds like the repair install messed some things up.

I would try reinstalling your motherboards drivers, directx, and using "driver cleaner pro" to reinstall your video drivers.

No use.. When I tried reinstalling Direct X 9.0c it didn't seem to do anything (I think it just looked for componets to update). I can't really find any drivers for my motherboard(ASUS P4P800 Deluxe) other than drivers for the onboard NIC.

I ran driver cleaner pro and reinstalled my video card drivers. At first it would say the device was working properly, but it still wouldn't let me increase the resolution. Then after rebooting it's back to the "This device cannot start (Code 10)" crap.

That's what microsoft says, although, as I said it sounds like the repair install you did messed up the drivers and it may be that the only solution would be to do a full reinstall.

That's the drivers for your motherboard, although I can't seem to find the chipset drivers for them. They have completely useless drivers like linux drivers  but no windows chipset drivers. You might try the disc that came with your motherboard.

HERE is a quick google search but all I see is the BIOS updates which I don't think will do you any good.

You might try to roll back the drivers in the device manager, or try a system restore back to before you did the repair install, it's been so long since I've done it, but there should be an option to do it in the help and support in the start menu, iirc.

I can't remember ever installing mobo drivers. It's like windows xp already has them. I updated my bios once, but that was a long time ago..

Their "Recommended resolution" is a joke. But it sounds like it's a registry problem, so I'm gonna look around in there.. I might just have to get a hold of a new xp cd and do a full repair.

Something interesting I found.. in device manager, under computer, it says "ACPI Multiprocessor PC". But I only remember putting one P4 2.8c in there when I built this thing.

Probably because of hyperthreading as that is multi-processor emulation. Mine says the same thing.
