    Hey all,

We have taken an old file server from our POS system and are attempting to save a little money and convert it to a desktop to use for misc stuff.

It currently is running Windows XP sp 3 and we will upgrade it to at least 7 in the very near future, however, because it was previously a file server it had a Raid configuration that is no longer necessary and none of the files or data on the system are of any value.

When I start up the computer it gives me the option to eliminate the Raid configuration and am not sure what the consequences might be if I accept the option?

    It is configured with:

    32 Bit

    Microsoft Windows XP Professional
    Version 2002
    Service Pack 3

    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU
    E8400 @ 3.00GHz
2.99 GHz, 1.97 GB of RAM

    Intel RAID Controllers
    Intel(R) ICH8R SATA RAID Controller
    RAID Hard Drives Port1: ST380815AS
and below that is "Missing Hard Drive" which I am sure the POS people took because it is proprietary software and had to move old information to the new POS system

Pleas advise and thank you in advance.

I'd leave it alone, it might be faster than the alternative.

    Hi

Do you know what RAID array its setup as?
Like Maj Att I would be leaving it alone as its likely still a great option for you, if RAID Zero and unlikely in a POS system its quick, likely its RAID One so a great backup option for data security.

    What are the HDD sizes?
How many drives did the server have in the array?

Thanks for checking this, we ended up eliminating the RAID array as one of the drives as degraded when they took the propriety information. Now the real challenge is upgrading from XP to Win7!

    Thank you for your assistance!

Very welcome, thanks for update, if you get stuck on the XP > Win7 upgrade and want some help, just start a new thread in the Software section and add as much info as possible and one of us will be glad to assist.
