im trying to learn about raid set ups.

i was reading about hooking them up as raid 0. im going to buy some big drives for my new pc, but thats not really my question.

the pc im ditching has ide drives. its always had 2 and i never use the second.

can i run the ide drives as raid or do i have to install a controller card? the mobo has sata connectors, do sata boards have built in controllers or is it a firmware/ driver based set up? does that make it less effective?

im going to keep searching but i though id just ask maybe i can get some clearer answers faster

ok so i mostly answered my own questions.

the only thing i have left is this.

on my new computer with 2 sata hds and a dvd burner and a dvd drive all sata, i only have 2 sata connectors on my temporary mobo (upgrading later focusing on cpu and other stuff for now)

do the mobos have decent raid capabilities by now? is it true hardware or still something else?

im going to have to buy a sata controller with 2 ports anyways, should i scavange ebay for a inexpensive or used hardware raid controller, or just use the mobo for the raid?

im just board if you are wondering why i am doing this, projects keep me happy entertained and single, the way i like it..... :p

I think what your main question is whether or not your mobo supports RAID? It's impossible for me to tell without your mobo model number, but you can find out by googling the m/n. A lot of mobos nowadays has at least RAID 0 & 1 capabilites. I would recommend looking for an ASUS motherboard. It might not be super cheap, but they are typically reliable and full featured (mine was anyway).
