12 year old ram vs 5 year old ram

i wonder if theyre interchangeable-id guess one computer can only take 2 gigs ram but if there's a 4 gig chip in it will it work provided the chip fits?

im stuck back in the IDE days and i really lost interest in making computers but i may try

i just prefer a laptop i guess

 

Not likely as it is not likely to be of the same type. Twelve year old RAM is likely to be DDR or maybe DDR2. Five year old RAM is likely to be DDR3. They are not compatible, they don't have the same number of pins, and will not fit in the different type slots.

And it is not just a matter of physically fitting. It has to be compatible with the chipset too, and that is not likely either due to the age difference.

If you are looking to add more RAM to your system, I recommend you use the Crucial Memory Advisor. This is a small applet you run on your system that will scan your system, determine what it supports, then offer compatible RAM suggestions. You don't have to buy suggested RAM but you should buy RAM with the same specifications as suggested RAM. That said, if you buy from the Crucial site, they guarantee the RAM will be compatible.

Note most other brand RAM makers have similar memory "wizards".
