    Hello all,

My loving girlfriend bought me a gig stick of RAM for Christmas. I've already got two 512MB sticks in there. I once heard that you cannot mix 512 sticks with gig sticks even if they are the same make and model. Can anyone confirm if this is true please.

    Merry Chrimbo! :major

Untrue. You can mix different sizes and speeds as long as they are the right type of RAM for the motherboard.

What you might have heard is that you need 2 of the same stick for the RAM to run in dual channel. This link explains a little bit about it:

But, you should be fine. If they don't work in dual channel, it will still work in single channel.

If your computer requires matched pairs of memory they need to be the same size. If it doesn't, you can do what Wyatt just said and mix to your heart's content. :)

Thanks alot for the quick replies guys....Major Geeks Forum just rocks IMO. I just now bunged in the gig stick in a red slot, whereas the 2 512 sticks are in green slots. No problems whatsoever on startup (unlike when I added the first extra 512, that required many restarts) turned on as normal, and under systems it clearly states 'RAM 2 gig'.

I run music software programs, just did a few tests on some of my heavier PC load projects and the improvement is immense. 50 quid well spent I say.
